language dvd for kids

Hi my 5.5 yr old has shown and interest in french. I was thinking of buying a language dvd called muzzy for here. It is a cartoon language course for kids. If I do I'll go for a second hand copy because her interest may not last and they are silly money new. I've read some reviews and the big criticism is that they are dated. eg the animation / stories are dated. They were produced by / for the bbc a really long time ago.

Dora the explorer is a new brand which is great but its in spanish.

so anyone know of any other education tools - dvd / PC based which I can use with her to learn french. Something fun for kids etc don't want to put her off....

there doesn't seem to be much on the market? or am I missing something.

  • I can't help with French but please don't think that Dora will teach your kids Spanish! You don't get far with numbers, up and down

We have been given muzzy on VIDEO by a relative (that's how old our copy is!) I've not yet looked at it as it's only recently come into our possession. Our DD is 4. I think a second hand and non-expensive copy on DVD can do no harm, if no-one else knows of any. Even if the stories and animation are dated, the French will have stayed the same and if your child is interested they'll be able to see past the lack of up to date animation I shoudl think.

My 6 month old is learning French, although only by listening to French nursery rhymes and watching "Peppa Cochon" on youtube! It helps that I speak French though I guess...

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

A great tool for picking up French basics (plus other languages) and for capturing their interest and imagination is the site below. Great native speakers and hard to get them away from it...

We had Muzzy which lay gathering dust - it just did not do it for them or me but some love it! As a bilingual family both the french and english side found it lacked any va va voom for young learners! Very unimpressed...

it's amazing I think there is an opening in the market here for another product - surely someone can do better than muzzy.

I wonder if there are familiar programmes in other languages online then- Peppa Pinc (Welsh, and Fireman Sam Tan) is available too so I'd think others have been dubbed. (I remember being amused by "Els Teletubbies" while I lived in Catalunya).

Edit: looks like ITNG has been sold to France... http://www.springfair.com/spring11/website/NewsDetails.aspx?PressId=pressRe415&ExhId=&refer= so might be worth having a look around for their favourites?

Appreciate that this is an old thread, but I'm keen that my children learn French and so have a bit of a routine of Muzzy before breakfast (not as a chore but as something we do together) and they seem to enjoy it.

I also bought a stack of Dora and Diego DVDs whilst visiting France, the Dora DVDs are great because they also have English sound tracks with French Subtitles which also helps me in my learning. We also have bought films aimed at the kids (Alvin and the Chipmunks as an example) in French and I encourage them to watch them in French.

I must admit I find Muzzy annoying BUT my 3 year old and 1 year old children seem to find it fascinating, and my Daughter does come out with bits and pieces of French at the oddest of times, such as at a family BBQ when she was cleaning up the Poubelles (not sure if I have spelt that right but it is French for Rubbish).

I am in the market for the 2nd level of Muzzy and am hoping to keep working at it, am also looking for regular lessons that I could take my daughter to (it's a bit of struggle as I live in Wales and so a lot of the nursery's and lessons are focused on teaching Welsh not English).

I find it a little frustrating that Dora and Andy manni is broadcasting and helps with the Spanish but I can't find anything similar that is Bi-Lingual for French.

Not sure if that helps or if anyone has any tips but feel free.

    Dave
