I'm reading this thread with interest as I'm having a horrid time at the moment not least of which my Bosch washer dryer has just broken. It sounds the same as the OP in that I can hear everything working and the drum sounds like it is about to turn, but nothing happens, yet I can manually spin the drum easily.
On the information gleaned on here I've just tracked down a repair man who's coming by on Wednesday and who agrees that my carbon brushes have gone, especially since it is 3- 4 years old , a modern design and runs virtually all day and half the night (the joys of a combined unit).
The only other interesting point is that the first 6 or 7 repair men I called refused to come out for a Bosch, I wonder why that is?
I think it is wonderful what you can find on MSE, what a great bunch you all are!

Poppycock, very easy to replace, take off the back of the washer/dryer, remove the Brush retaining clips, slide out/slide in.
A lot of enginners wont relace them as much more profit in replacing the motor( and usualy 1 they have salvaged and put new brush's in:eek: ) and charged for a new 1.0 -
When I first saw this thread I thought of the brushes.
If they don't work then it's £10 or £20 gone, not a huge amount when you consider the value of the dryer. It's not your communal garden make I suspect.Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -

It's a Whirlpool, but I bought it from a local American Air Base which was closing down.
Soolin - will you let me know if the new brushes fix yours, please? And also, if you don't mind, how much does it cost?Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in.0 -
Is it a Dryer or a Washer Dryer. If is a Tumble Dryer there is every chance it is not a motor with brushes & could be a faulty Capacitor.0

It's just a dryer. When I used to press the start button it used to start. Recently, when I press the start button I've had to hold it in for a second or two before it gets going and it makes a noise as if it is trying to start; sometimes I've had to try two or three times before it would go. Over the past few weeks, sometimes if I've had two or three goes at starting it, it will cut out completely, but if I leave it about 15 minutes it might start the next time. Then when it does start - it's perfect.Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in.0
