Possible fraud on my Nationwide Flexaccount.

Hi all.
I've just checked the balance of my Nationwide Flexaccount and was shocked to see it at -£320. Yesterday the balance was just over £800 and my car insurance renewal which came to £770 was due to be taken from the account yesterday. I have phoned my car insurance company and they have assured me that £770 only was taken out of the account yesterday and no more than that. Somehow about an extra £350 has been taken from yesterday and I am fairly sure it must be fraudulent because nothing else should have been taken.
I have just phoned Nationwide and the guy on the phone said he cannot tell me why this has happened until it shows up on their system which could take a couple of days. I just find that unbelievable - surely Nationwide should be able to see where my money has gone?!
Any help would be appreciated.

Is your debit card still in your possession? It must be a card transaction of some kind as a cash withdrawal would usually show up immediately.
Think about any instances where you have used your card recently - including online.
Did Nationwide give you any advice or stop your card or anything..?If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -
Staffie,
I'm so sorry to hear that this has happened to you. I know how sick I would feel if it had happened to me.
I know it's a hassle, but is it worth cancelling your account card, or reporting it as stolen if it's no longer with you, just in case someone has taken your details? That might spare you if it happens again.
Good luck sweetie - hope you get things sorted OK. x0 -
Yes, my debit card is still in my possession.
I've worked out that the amount taken is £346.75. I can view my recent transactions online and the only places where I've used my card this month is at a trusted garage where I had my car serviced and my local Shell petrol station. I did use Paypal last night to pay for something on Ebay but I have checked my Paypal account and there were no other transactions. I'm always very careful to cover my pin number when using my card and I use very complex passwords on any websites. I guess I can't do much but wait.
EDIT: Nationwide didn't give me any advice or stop the card. They've just told me to sit and wait until it shows up.0 -

It may be no more than a simple keying-error at the bank or your insurance company somewhere along the line (e.g. someone typing £630 instead of £360), which happens from time-to-time. Hopefully they will be able to sort it out ASAP on Monday for you.
This sort of thing has happened to me in the past (wasn't a keying error but a bill accidentally being paid twice) - so I well and truly understand how you are feeling.
If an error HAS taken place, resulting in your overdrawn balance, do bear in mind that the persons/company liable for the mistake should also refund any overdraft charges or stopped-payment fees which may have happened due to their putting you overdrawn.
Good luck. x0 -
