I had the tiniest of water damage in my kitchen (quite big room) and since the ceilings were swirly artex the 'quotes' I got in said the whole ceiling would have to come down and replaced, the insurance paid for it and remember to get someone to check your electrics. So now I have nice smooth ceilings.
Oh just remembered, my quote included painting the walls and skirting boards and painting the ceiling!!!! Couldn't believe it! All the workmen that came to give a quote said this was common practice and the insurance company agreed.... cost just under a grand! Good luckYou may walk and you may run

This doesn't really answer your question, but if you've got an acrylic bath, the reason behind the flooding could be that the sealant round the waste pipe is gone. The exact same thing happened to me after I had a bath, and that's what had happened - the sealant had perished and the connecting pipe had thus loosened slightly, and as an acrylic bath has a bit of flex in it, my weight in a full bath allowed some water to escape round the waste pipe into the floor space and through the ceiling. OH fixed it quite easily, and we claimed for redecorating the ceiling.0 -

Do you know what the claims procedure is?
Some companies ask you to assess the damage and then get quotes to put it right. So ask a few (three) builders to do just that.
Other ins companies send out there own person to assess the damage and will possibly appoint a builder to do the work.
Have you asked NU about the process?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
The plasterboard will need to be replaced, depending on the size of ceiling, i would replace the lot because plasterboard is like bloting paper and will have just absorbed the water thus making it weak.the time spent patching a decent hole you could have just boarded it again if it is a reasonably small ceiling, And if your insurance company is paying for the work id get it all done.
before the ceiling is reboarded/patched it is important to let the floor joists completley dry out.0 -
thanks everyone for your replies :T
am still waiting on Nu to get back to me bout my claim apparently there is a bit of a back log with all the recent bad weather
