Store cupboard - in case of emergency

There's another thread somewhere discussing what items have got VAT on and are therefore likely to go up but I can't find it. There's a definite impression that prices have gone up quite a bit in the last couple of weeks so that the shops can do a 'we will pay your VAT' promotion if VAT does go up in the Budget on Tuesday, or else they will start a price war. If that's right, now might not be a particularly good time to stock up - if VAT does go up they will hold prices for a bit and if it doesn't go up , then prices could even come down a bit in a price war.
However I suspect they will still put prices up if they can get away with it. So no harm in doing a big shop this weekend in my view. I will certainly buy extra if I see any BOGOFsIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
please dont tell my mum this!!! she already has umpteen bags of sugar, tea, washing powder and the other week spent £9 stocking up on her favourite biscuits in Marks and Sparks!!! if she stocks up anymore she will have to extend her kitchen! I told her that at MY age i dont even buy green bananas! she has enough stock to open her own shop or supply a third world country!0

Please not another stocking up thread- what is the reason this time ?
A sensible store cupboard and basic cooking skills are all we need. Obviously certain offers are worthwhile stocking up on if you can use/store something, but otherwise why ?
VAT is not charged on a lot of food anyway!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Stock pile if you want but personally I don't see the point - I have a decent store cupboard and if push came to shove I could prob live on my stores for a month or more but thats not 'stock piling' its just a slight food shopping addiction lol!
In fact my friend and I were joking about this today - planning on filling the cellar with rice, lentils and bottles of water and hiding til the tories get voted out (or the revolution starts)People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

We do, indeed, have an existing thread - stocking up in case of emergency. I'll merge this later.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0

A quick way to encourage price rises is to stock up as things will be in shorter supply and this will push up the price even more .I can remember back in the 1970s when the almost automatic reply to anything out of stock in the shops was 'Don't you know there is a world shortage' I think like a lot of people I have around 6-8 weeks supply of food in both my freezer and storecupboards and would rather have the cash in my bank account than sitting as an extra tin of baked beans in my cupboards ( i'm not even that keen on beans anyway

some interesting replies. I suppose it depends on what is ment by stocking up. I have a tiny 2 bed cottage and a small kitchen so cant have any more than a weeks supply of anything. But I have now decided to store extras under the bed and in the wardrobe. Maybe my stockpiling isjust someone elses nornal in kitchen provisions. I thinkI will start buying a bit extra, when its on offer especially, incase of redundancy, short work hours etc."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

Same here cottage and lack of storage where shopping should go ie kitchen or bathroom but it works out much much cheaper to shop once or twice a month further afield and stock up on items that are vastly cheaper there than do a weekly shop at our local supermarkets. Not to mention the fact that we can't get some things ie men's slippers and home brewing supplies locally anyway. No longer half of Optimisticpair
