Interestingly a 'card' dropped out of a well known magazine last week asking ' Do you want to play the Irish Lottery ' with a tear off card to request an information pack , which I completed to an address in Liverpool. I received an email today with a special offer to be part of a syndicate for Irish , Spanish & German lotteries, and tonight a phone call " hello (first name) , when I asked who was calling again they said "hello (first name ) , (first name) then surname pronounced incorrectly with a non british accent , possibly Canadian , to which i put the phone down as it just did not sound a legitimate call , this may well be a follow up call after the tear off I sent back....better take more care next time !!

I sent one of those cards off for an info pack and only got a rather dodgy sounding phone call in return. I too hung up and I've never had anything else through the post. I think if I'm going to do the Irish lottery I'll do it through a high street bookies.

I find it sad that some members find it appropriate to be rude in their replies - I need to convince my father, hence my posting on this website, and search for reassurance for my own belief that this is a scam. Those who leave arrogant messages do the site no favours - I had seen some of these prior to writing - but have to say the style of writing did not come across as helpful nor informed, but full of self righteousness and just using the opportunity for a petty rant.

I personally feel sorry for anyone who has been taken in by this, but at the same time fully agree with the comments about wasting money. I would far rather my father gave his hard earned money to the poor than to a conman. I hope this thread will convince him - I am convinced and there is no need for petty 'told you so' replies.
  • I’m always sceptical when things like this come through the post, and I too was a bit wary when I received a letter from European Lottery Guild a few years ago. But then I read an article about them on the BBC website, something about a British man who won millions playing the Spanish Lottery through their service, and I thought, well, the BBC wouldn’t have written a positive story about a scam, right? So I decided to play it and I've got to say, I've never looked back. There are lots of scam companies out there, but ELG isn't one of them. I play mostly the Spanish and Irish lotteries now, and I’ve even won a few hundred euros! It’s good to be cautious about lottery companies, but European Lottery Guild is actually legitimate. (I just did a search and that article is still online, if you want to see it for yourself. I can't post the link but the story is called: Man wins £12m on Spanish lottery.)

Have you noticed that it 'looks' like a BBC website but the formatting of the page is different - this is also true of the linked North Devon gazette page - I am not convinced by these

Thanks Kas - these people seem to target older folks - my dad is slightly hard of hearing and easily taken in - he too was 'promised' if he joined a select syndicate with £200 it would repay thousands within a month - and yes he was can now look back and recognise if it was that easy they would be 'doing it for themselves' and not spending their time ringing round trying to 'help' others make money. After staying with me for a fortnight and returning to find no envelope with winnings I think he has truly 'seen the light' - he has now cancelled his card so they can't take any more - we are certain they took more than he agreed but it is difficult to prove. hope your mum has also recognised this for the scam it is. i appreciate your email - thank you :o)
  • Hi

European Lottery Guild has asked us to post a right of reply. MSE doesn't endorse anything a company says on the Forum.

I would like to reiterate what European Lottery Guild posted last year on this thread, as the same issue keeps cropping up. ELG is a legitimate ticket agency that sends a detailed confirmation of every order and never charges people to receive their winnings. You are guaranteed the full value of all the prizes you win, with no taxes deducted and no additional fees of any kind.

We are extremely proud of our reputation as an honest, efficient and trustworthy lottery entry service. Fraudulent companies use this in order to scam people. If you think you have been contacted by a scam masquerading as ELG, please contact us. Our website has a list of freephone numbers, depending on where you are in the world. I invite you to check out the “about us” section of the website as well for more information about ELG.

Thank you for your in depth report on your experience with this outfit ... this is only one of very many companies who treat customers as cash cows , this is done by , insurance , banking , loans , car sales , credit cards , mostly household names , they get away with theft beacause the regulators have no teeth , the people who should be protecting the consumer are themselves on the take and are actively aiding and abbeting wholesale fraud , this will continue for ever unless we get a government who are serious about protecting ordinary people from big business ................... DONT HOLD YOUR BREATH :rotfl::eek::rotfl:

  • I sent off for information on this outfit, got the blurb back which set off warning bells. Googled them re: complaints, and found this site. I got the original application from NFOP (National Federation of Pensioners- Royal Mail, BT and British Steel Pensioners) magazine as a loose leaflet inside. Talk about targeting trusting and vulnerable people. Going to 'suggest' to the magazine that they remove these people from their advertising. So if you've got elderly relations that have been scammed perhaps that's how they've been hooked.
  • Hi i joined ELG payed 30 dollars...Now i get call from Canada from Indian man sure last name was Wilson... Now i been told i been selected for special thing where only i receive the winnings... But that is going to cost me another $180 dollars...When my card declined the conversation went down hill fast seems he lost interest its a scam i only lost 30 but could have been more...Dont touch it....
