Hi all,
Hope you don't mind me posting and it is definitely moneysaving cos if this cake doesn't work after the money I've spent on equipment I'll have to go and buy one and hubby will go mad (so possibly actually marriage saving too!
)
I've got my little boy's 5th birthday cake in the oven as we speak. It has half the time still left to cook and the sides are looking very ready but the middle really isn't!
What can I do to salvage it if anything??
Thanks in advance!!

Stick a skewer in the middle. If it comes out sticky then the middle isn't done. If the sides are burning then turn the temperaturevdown for the rest of the time.0

What temp is your oven on at? You could turn it down a bit so it cooks a little slower and the the outside won't burn as much. Once it's out and cooled, you might be able to cut the burnt bits off if it will leave enough cake that can be eaten.
If you need to start again, make sure you line the tin with grease proof paper that sticks up a good couple of inches above the top of the tin. That should help it cook evenly and be less likely to burn around the edges. Also make sure your oven isn't on too high."I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0 -

Cover the whole cake top with greaseproof paper, that will prevent burning, what temp is oven? Lower temp but put in a tray of water in the very bottom of the oven this should prevent drying out. Remember the middle is the most dense so does take a little longer to cook x0

Thank you all so much for your replies! :A
I had already lowered the temperature before I posted, more out of desperation than any knowledge(!), but it did seem to work. The cake was ready about half an hour before the recipe said, but it turned out ok in the end thank goodness! I hope I'll have a very happy little boy tomorrow when he sees it!
Thank you again so much. I might even post a pic in a bit if I can get my act together and anyone's interested haha.

Glad to hear it turned out well. I'm sure your little boy will be very proud of his mummy for baking him his birthday cake. I'd love to see a pic of the finished article!"I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0

Thanks Alleycat.
I don't know why but I put this pressure on myself every year that I HAVE to make his cake myself! I always stress about it and always wish I'd just bought one but then always do the same the next year haha. This year though I did buy the hedgehog to put on top, which took some stress away!
Here it is..I just hope he likes it now!

Ah, that's fantastic!! If he doesn't like it, I'll have it! Mmmh chocolate fingers!"I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0

Aww, it looks really cute!
Is that chocolate fingers around the outside? What are they stuck with, icing?
I might use that idea for my next bday cake to hide the jam/choc icing that's usually spilling out of the middle

Thanks MF!
Yeah, it's chocolate fingers. I covered the cake with green ready to roll icing first, then just brushed it with a bit of water so it was tacky, then just stuck the choc fingers on. They seem to be holding fine so far!
