These kids are future voters and perhaps voters with memories and want something different for their children - can you blame them? It is just the majority voting or is that a bad thing. Maybe they are not "educated" enough and should not be allowed to vote.
Nothing wrong with a good secondary education, my wife had 1, I had the good fortune to have a grammar school education and I would like to have the choice for my children. My first son is hoping to start grammar school in September, my second son will probably have a good integrated secondary school education in a few years time. I as a parent am glad I have the choice;)I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -
I'm no big fan of Mrs Ruane but I do think you should actually award her with a bit more respect. What is it to you if her kids go to school in Newry that is their family choice or if her husband works here or in ROI. There are many people who travel back and forward over the border everday.
I have no problem with Mrs Ruane and/or her husband living in Co Louth and working in NI or sending her children to school here. I have no problem with the fact that SF are democratically elected and therefore entitled to their seats in the assembly.
I have though got a massive problem with her choosing a grammar school education for her own children (as she is widely reported to have done) whilst seeking to deny the same opportunity to my children. That sort of hypocrisy makes my blood boil.
The system we had worked quite well - it wasn't perfect, not by a long way, but what is? Its fine to say that grammar schools are outdated, but what is that alternative? I can't understand why people think that academic selection is divisive, when the alternative (if we are to follow the way things have gone in the rest of the UK) is that places in the best schools are allocated to those whose parents can afford to buy a house near them. I know that the theory is that all the schools level out, with some of the most capable pupils, and some of the less able, and everyone gets an equal chance, but in reality this isn't how it happens.
I know the area that I live in. Even if academic selection were done away with tomorrow, I know the schools that parents, including myself, would want their children to go to. Sadly for me, the two schools closest to me would be at the bottom of most people's lists (I'm in a rural area), and this terrifies me, as moving closer to the other schools just wouldn't be an option that is available to me.0 -
would YOU want to take on an education system that has been decimated, downgraded and totally destroyed by a previous minister....there's probably no coming back from the mess its in now...."20 foot barge pole" is a phrase that spings to my mind....thank goodness my kids have all completed their education. No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere0

We're going around in circles, sometime soon we'll have a world leader who will surpass the Queen in diplomacy, the Pope in religiosity and Obama in power.......Once that happens society will revert back to square one, tribal. Then we start all over again looking for leadership.............then Jesus will come!0

21st May...repent....no wait, that date was a non-starter...No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere0 -
Prophet Pretani predicts Jim Allister will force through a voluntary coalition in Stormont before 2015, Sinn Fein will become the largest party and will attempt to obliterate Unionism in de North. A new and improved British/Irish council will react by signing a new agreement which makes it impossible for any leading party both sides of the border to do away with either traditions. Sinn Fein will either have to transform themselves into the SDLP, join up with the 32 county sovereignty movement or simply fade away into the mists of time.
I'm off, see you in 2015:rotfl:0 -
Pretani
Interesting thinking but my odds are on just more of the same if we allow it. There was very little change in seats from the various parties this time round.
Remember we voted for them!! (and if you did not bother to vote, then well then someone else had their say instead of you so don't complain)0 -

The evangelical broadcaster who left followers crestfallen by his failed prediction that last Saturday would be Judgement Day says he miscalculated.
Harold Camping said it had "dawned" on him that God would spare humanity "hell on Earth for five months" and the apocalypse would happen on 21 October.
Mr Camping said he felt "terrible" about his mistake.
But he said he could not give financial advice to those who spent their life savings in the belief the end was nigh.
Mr Camping had predicted that on 21 May, true believers would be swept up to heaven while a giant earthquake would bring destruction for those left behind. It's a great day for singing a song / It's a great day for moving along / It's a great day for morning to night / It's a great day for everybody's plight.
Your father pedals car telephones at a 300 percent markup. Your mother works on heavy commission at a camera store. Graduated to it from espresso machines. Hah!0
