Ipod Nano to Ipod Touch HELP

My DS has just upgraded to an IPOD touch as his old nano screen has broken.

He has hooked both up via ITUNES, which he tells me is the ONLY wat to get files onto it?

Anyway, when he opens the file with all the old music on, ITUNES won't allow him to click & drag these over to either the new IPOD or the library?

I've had a quick search on Google, but can only find expensive software that promises to do the job.

Does anyone know any other way of transferring his own music from device to the other?

On a similar note, I've just bought a second hand 5th gen Nano and I don't have any software yet. Is media monkey better than itunes for putting music on my nano?

If you don't want to get music off of a non-synced Apple product then iTunes is fine. It is bloated and not very well written on the PC, but is the easiest to sync music, videos podcasts etc...
