Everybody I know that had private plates never got the old reg number bacl when they reregistered it.

I don't think they reissue the number though as that would cause problems with manufacturers supplying spares that are supplied using the VIN or original Reg No.

I think it would also cause all kinds of problems with HPi and the information held by finance companies.

That's odd, because all the ones I have seen, have had the original mark re-assigned.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Not odd really, your experince is different to mine, that is just life, nothing strange in that atall.

My sample is of four cars, all cars were owned by Private Hire drivers and owned for 3 years, none of them got the old number back when they removed the private plate on trade-in.

If you read the paperwork you get when you put on a private plate you will see that it says something to the effect that when if you remove the PP at a later date there is no guarantee you get the original number back.

They may have changed the form since I last put on a PP, as it was 1994 when I last assigned one.

I'm pretty sure that nowadays it's extremely rare for the old plate to be allocated to anyone else. :)

Bought one car with a standard reg on that had a PP before, HPI showed it was it's original reg.

Another I put a private reg on, original reg went back on it when it was sold.

    The answer as to why the two previous posters have different experiences is simple;

Until a few years ago, if you took your vanity plate off a car, it got an age-related plate, but not the one that was on it previously.

Now, if you put your vanity plate onto a new car (or onto retention), it gets the original plate back (NOTE - if you have owned the car for a good number of years, it may be that DVLA have not kept details of the old plate on record, in which case it gets a different age-related plate).

    :j

DVLA do not issue plates that have already been used - whether that is "years ago" on a vehicle that no longer exists, or a plate that would have been on your car (had you not put the vanity plate on it.

I've transfered my private plate about 14 times to newer cars over the years and everytime the car I sold had the old original number put back on to it free of charge

to those who say "Can't say I've ever understood the appeal of these things myself"

its your choice same as it's mine

in fact bought one tonight for my youngest whose only 11 yr old

what a surprise she'll have on her 17th or maybe 18th birthday

she always says she wants one like dad
  •:mad:If you do want to buy a new number plate - like I have just been trying to do - do not buy it from British Car Registrations ! if even a tiny thing goes wrong and you need to speak to them you have to call their customer services number (sales can not and will not transfer you) this costs £1.00 per minute even on the 0121 number do not call these people their website does not tell you it is a premium number - and even if you ask them too they will not call you back they just say if you don't want to pay write to us. I run a business and we specifically have a freephone number to give to anyone with any issues as a gesture of goodwill for our customers as you should not have to pay to sort issues out ! sorry to rant but beware !

I doubt it will matter after 4 months.

To the recent poster who dragged the thread up - Just use the DVLA. Much clearer pricing and most plates on these sites are available direct without all the commission added.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • Good shout, didn't even spot that.

It's a bit like going onto the bargain board and posting "I don't like bargains".
