Why is there a hole on my sink?

My terminology is not great so here goes.
It is with reference to my bathroom sink. As expected in the sink is a drain hole and an overflow hole above it which prevents the sink from over flowing.
Today my sink was blocked. Got my plunger out, water in the sink, covered the overflow hole and started pumping away. Water started to drip onto the floor. Underneath the sink on the left is a hole. When water is forced into the overflow channel inside the sink it comes out of this hole. It is the first time i have come across a sink with this hole. Any idea what is it for? For manufacturing purpose?
What is the best way to seal it?
I had to cover this hole and the overflow hole and get my son to pump the plunger which eventually unblocked the sink.

It sounds like the sink was never plumbed properly for the overflow channel to leak. Take a photo for more advice, or call a plumber.0 -
There is nothing wrong with the plumbing. I feel it is a manufacturing defect. The sink works perfectly. It is only when i use the plunger to unblock the sink the problem appears. I will take a pic and post it here tomorrow.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems

Hi,
it could be that that is the design of the sink and that is the overflow outlet, which should be connected to another outlet.
Try filling sink to the overflow and watch where water escapes to.0 -
Hi, i've seen a few sinks with this, vast majority of china sinks are hollow, bad castings when there made can lead to an escape route for water from the overflows. Its not usually a problem and i wouldn't be to worried about it, if you want to fill it in use some silicone.Norn Iron Club member No 3530

Is that not just a hole thats made so that when its fired in the oven it lets the hot air out (or somthing like that), similar to ornaments where you also have a hole in the bottom, why its letting water out i would go with above its just bad casting.0
