Washer dryer breakdown

My Hoover washer dryer fails to dry and is making a very high pitched noise when in operation. It is only 1 year 6 months old so out of the 1 year manufactures warranty.
Is it reasonable to go to the retailer and ask them for a repair? The sales of goods act states that an item should be "of satisfactory quality" and I believe a washer dryer that breaks down after 1 year 6 months is not of satisfactory quality.
