best cylinder vacuum for dog hair...HELP!!!

Hi, my electrolux vacuum is not coping withall the dog hair our new dog is shedding(lab cross) and I need to get a new one as soon as! Been reading reviews on Which, which seem to recommend the miele but also read they are expensive to get bags for and to repair (like a Dyson is!) and some complaints from people about the motor burning out within a year or two. also, both the latter vacuums I've mentioned are expensive, altho if they are good and reliable I can gulp and get over the price!
Anyone any recommendations please?

Get a Henry .... powerful, not expensive and last for ever. We have had Dyson's and numerous others over the years but nothing comes close to the Henry we have now (..... so my wife tells me).

Miele cat and dog. I had one for about 10 years that never broke down, and it was working fine until my naughty puppy chewed through the electrical flex and it went bang. (The hoover not the puppy!).

Replaced it with another Miele which is about 6 years old now and it's never broken down either.

You can get unofficial bags from ebay which are just as good as proper Miele bags. The fabric ones are better than the brown paper ones.
Here I go again on my own....

Maybe- but Dyson have one of the highest failure rates.

I would recommend the Cat and Dog model too.

I guess any vacuum with either a turbine or motor brush head will suffice.

eg- if you want a Henry with a powered head.

They are more robust than a Miele but lack any of the refinements.

Alternatively get one of these to remove the shedding hair

and use a salmon oil food supplement to reduce the likelyhood of shedding

Was inclining towards the miele cat and dog but wanted to be sure cos it is v expensie. May have a scout round at prices today then. It's a shame cos our old vacuum is perfectly ok, and we even bought a revlving head attachment for hair but it can cope with human hair but not dog! With ref to the salmon, he does have a dry organic salmon food frequently, but the fuminator wouldn't be any good as he's like a lab in coat so quite short haired..and prob that's why he shedding a lot as I know choc labs shed massively twice a year. Have booked him in for a trim with our local groomers, hopefully that may help.

I have had my normal Dyson for 5 years. Never had problems with it and it copes well with my lab maulting. Only thing I do suggest is that you do clean the filter every 6mnths like it says in instructions, it does make a big difference to suction.

Op have you ever used an upright? I took the plunge recently.
After all those years of using a cylinder I'd never go back to one.

    I got a Vax....

It's embarassing the first time I used it, how much dirt it picked up!
It gets the dog hairs up in one sweep, it's fantastic. :)

  • Whilst I am happywith my Cat and Dog I do have to concede that there are better machines.

    Unfortunately they cost even more...

The best i have ever used was the Miele revolution power plus 5000

    http://www.discountelectronicsstore.co.uk/electronic_supplies/miele-revolution-powerplus-5000-s5981-2200w-cylinder-cleaner-in-metallic-garnet-red/

The elctrobrush was strong enough to pretty much pull the head across the floor- like a decent upright. From memory the brush was rated at 280w- that was 4 times more powerful than the head on my AEG (electrolux) Vampyr at the time. The downside was that it added to overall weight- my mum has one and she has to carry the body and head separately when taking upstairs.

Unfortunately I can not find any machines on the Miele site that match it's specification anymore.

BTW if you do go for the cat and dog get the premium model- the mini turbo brush is great for the sofa and worth the extra cost alone.
