Hi
I am trying to get donations of small gifts (to be given as prizes) or food to go towards our charity pony club camp.
I have never done this before, I have typed up a load of letters but is it better to phone or visit in person?
If I phone what do I say before they put the phone down on me? Or send a letter then follow up with a phone call?
Thanks

I would go in person to local companies as most will often donate something small on the spot. It may be worth taking along a letter as some may ask for one. Don't forget to ask at pharmacies, hairdressers, beauty salons, etc. For the big supermarkets I would go along and ask in person again. It's a bit scary, but if you don't ask you don't get and they can be quite generous. For things like days out, bowling or cinema tickets, etc I would send a nice letter with a follow up phone call if you think it warrants it.
Depends what sort of prizes you are after, but if you get some good ones you could always raffle them in advance to raise money to buy the food/gifts you want.
Good luck!

Yes, going into the places in person is much better. Letters could easily just go into the bin. When you go into supermarkets ask for an events co-ordinator (they're in charge of giving away stuff). I emailed one before and they said the co-ordinators took care of that sort of thing.New year, new comper here!
