I'm just looking at closed's thread - my computer is a pretty ancient xp thing. Ths system information is saying 2.93 GHz 480 MB of RAM?

I'm just running the malwarebytes scan at the moment.

The commit charge total before I started doing anything was 436624,
peak - 594256
physical memory total figures are 490992

Once the scan has finished, I'll post the hijack log - any other information I need to add while I'm at it?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

480 meg of ram is not really enough , increasing to at least 1.5 gb will show big improvements (open it up and see if spare slot , use crucial.coms scanner to see whats in there and whats spare) , on an old pc you will probably pick up ram off ebay for next to nothing

I don't have time to go through that right now, but one quick question: are you still using the Sagem USB modem? If so... I'd very much suggest you change to an ADSL router. Using a USB modem (without a hardware firewall) will put you at risk. Kaspersky will help limit that risk, but not enough.

I don't think so, I think that was the freebie I got from tiscali years back which I've now replaced with a belkin when I got wifi.

You can untick autostarts if you press Start > Run, then type in msconfig and enter. Go to the Startups tab up the top.

This is for the Cyberlink remotecontrol - only needed if you use a remote control with your disk drive. Untick if you don't have a remote control.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe"

These don't need to autostart and can be unticked in msconfig:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.0.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.0\program\quickstart.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')

This is needed apparently to scan or fax directly with one of the buttons, can untick and see if you get problems - if so, just re-enable it:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lexmark X1100 Series] "C:\Program Files\Lexmark X1100 Series\lxbkbmgr.exe"

Two USB modem entries - no need to be running if you don't have a USB modem!

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adiras] adiras.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: DSLMON.lnk = C:\Program Files\SAGEM\SAGEM F@st 800-840\dslmon.exe

Up to you if you want MSN running automatically - if you don't use it all the time, better to just run when you want to. Turn it off by looking in to Tools or Options within MSN:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

This doesn't need to be there, unless you like it. Detects when the digital camera is inserted, but so does the computer anyway:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [OM_Monitor] C:\Program Files\OLYMPUS\OLYMPUS Master\Monitor.exe -NoStart

This is something to do with the disc recording functions, takes up between 15mb-45mb. I'd untick it, and see if you notice any problem. At worst, can just re-enable it by ticking it again:

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [Power2GoExpress] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go\Power2GoExpress.exe" (User 'SYSTEM')

It wouldn't hurt to uninstall any toolbars that you don't use.

Thanks, I'll give it a go.
As far as I know it's just the yahoo toolbar that's showing up on screen. I did have google but somehow managed to accidentally lose it.

Yeah you've just got the Java (needed), Realplayer downloader, Kaspersky, Adobe, and yahoo toolbars. If you like them, keep them of course.

I don't seem to have anything in startup that starts with O4 when I do the msconfig thing.

No the O4 is just the way it's categorised.

Take Quicktime, it looks like this in Hijackthis:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

but under MSConfig it'll look like:
    msconfig.png

Can drag the 'Command' column to be wider so to make sure it's the right entry.

This is what startup is showing - I can't see what I'm looking for from your suggestions of things to untick, sorry.

Whoops, a bit big, I'll try again.
