    Two thoughts...

    1. Make sure you tell them that freephone calls will NOT be free!

    2. Ensure the call is disconnected at the end of the call, otherwise there is a possibility of running up huge bills! Not so likely to occur if the phone has a cradle - except if power to the cradle is switched off!

You need to gently steer them in the right direction. If they will rarely use the phone, then does it really matter if it has an 01 number? After all it's not as if they will be giving it out to many people if they aren't there very often.

PAYG will be far cheaper for them if they won't use the phone on a regular basis.

If you are going to buy a mobile anyway, buy a smartphone and install one of the numerous "caller ID spoofer" apps that are out there.
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.

I don't think they can afford a smartphone, nor pay to re-route calls through a spoofing service.

You don't pay for a spoofing service, the app does the spoofing for you.

As far as smartphones go, they are well sub £100 these days for the entry level handsets.

Can you provide to a spoofing application that does not cost money to use?

I think if you read these posts, the elderly couple cannot afford a smartphone and would probably be somewhat daunted in how to use it.

So they would be best just getting a simple PAYG handset for £20 (including a sim and £10 credit), and not worrying about the 01 number.

google "desk top gsm phone" - a couple there around £100 mark
They look like standard house phone with handset but require SIM card to operate via mobile network
