NPower Gas Meter Standing Charge

I just moved into a flat with gas and electricity meters, both are with NPower. Having never dealt with utility bills before (I've just flown the nest :)) I don't really know what to expect to pay. I put £10 on my gas card and put it into the meter, and it said it was taking off 49p for 'debt' and 79p 'emergency credit'. Fair enough I'd used the emergency credit, but I'm not in debt with them, so I rang NPower who told me that there's a 40p standing charge per day for having a gas meter. This seems really steep to me, even if I don't use any gas at all that's £2.80 per week. And £145.60 per year!

Does 40p per day sound about right? Or should I be looking into switching suppliers, or having the gas meter removed and switching to bills (the letting agent said that this could be an option)?
