Fitted alcove wardrobes

Hello all
Just had some quotes for fitted wardrobes on either side of a fireplace in our main bedroom.
This is in West London so I accept that the price will be more than other areas.
Dimensions would be 268cm (ht) x 94 cm / 92 cm (wt) x 59.5cm depth.
Made out of MDF, spray painted at the workshop.
Basically wardrobes with cupboards at the top. 3 internal drawers in each wardrobe, some shelving in one wardrobe.
Total quote is £3900 including VAT, breaks down as £2.5K for supply and fitting and further £1.4K for the painting.
The firm are local and the quality of other work (in photos) looks good.
It is difficult to know however whether this is a reasonable price. Would welcome advice.

Seems a bit steep! I've just had a fitted mdf wardrobe put in on one side of the fireplace in my bedroom, similar size dimensions to yours with shelving, two short drops for tops, one long drop for trousers - for £500. We decided to decorate it ourselves, but our workman quoted a further £130 for painting.
I live in east London but I don't think west London would be that much more expensive!0 -
Wow. I'm in the wrong job! Get 2 more quotes to see what the going rate is. The fact that they charge so much for MDF cupboards is IMO outrageous. These are not so different from kitchen cabinets, and you don't pay anything like that much for those.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0

£1.4K for painting some MDF boards!
Is there some sort of special paint with a high gold and platinum content that will be finished with a diamond coating?
£2.5K for supply and fitting  I appreciate it has to be custom made, but MDF is cheap and easy to cut and put together. This can't be more than a couple of days work (at most) cutting and installing.
I am no expert here but to me that quote sounds crazy."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
getting a good quality spray finish, which will be flawless for that price(well it should be) does cost a lot more than a brushed paint job. If its a modern crisp clean interior then it will look right. If you have a period design then a brush finish may look better as well as being more authentic.
Spraying paint is more expensive due to the specialised environment you need to obtain a high quality finish, the paint is different also as it does not dry it sets as its 2 part mixed and a chemical reaction takes place, needing a primer, then rubbed down, under coat, then 2 top coats. Is it a high gloss finish?
MDF may only be 15-40pound per 1220x1440 sheet, lets say thats 6 sheets totalling 200.
4 days workshop time at 25-30 a hour, thats 800-960.
draws will need to be made of solid, likely on draw runners (top of the range are 37 pound a pair) so thats 111 per unit, 222 for the two
solid timber might be popular allow 50 for this.
delivery and fitting 400 a day (likely that will be on day)
handles on drawers (can spend £2 or £200 on a handle sky is the limit really) they most likely say supply your own (if it has handles at all)
so lets say 3,900 less the VAT, 3250 - MATERIALS AND LABOUR(200,960,400,222,50,1400(spraying, I can't say how competative this is apart from I know its not cheap)
= a possible £18 profit, should the job be compleated in a faster time scale then maybe theres more in it.
see what others will quote is the only way you will get a better picture.0 -
Seems very highly priced. Not very MSE! Talk to a local chippy, they'd do it for a fraction of the cost.Thinking critically since 1996....0
