I think you will need to decide which font you want for the finished article. If it is say Ariel 12, then try changing each document to Ariel 12 and fix the formatting of each document before joining them up.
Also you might try inserting a page break after each section (document) before you add the next document in.
Finally if it is not necessary that the final document is in Word, then you could convert each document to pdf and then join the pdf's together. There will be no changing of formatting when you join up pdf files.

Open Word and on the insert menu, select file and then open the first word doc.

Press ctrl-return to get a new page and then insert the next page.

Assuming you are importing from other word documents:

    1) In the source document you are copying from, highlight and copy everything except the last paragraph mark. To see the paragraph marks, click on the show/hide button on the toolbar, it's the one like a backwards "P" next to the 100% zoom.
With shortcut keys Control+a then Shif+Up arrow then Control+c
    2) In the target document just paste (Control+v) where you want it to go. Don't worry about formatting just yet
    3) Lather, rinse, repeat 1 and 2 as required
    4) In the target document select all (Contol+a)
    5) Now Control+space will reset all of the styles to default
