AbbeyLife

I recently received a letter from AbbeyLife asking me if I was still at the address on the front of the envelope, as they had sent me correspondence to an old address, that had been returned to them. I rang AbbeyLife and was asked for my policy number, which I don't know as I don't have a policy with them. They asked me to send copy of my passport or driving licence, utility bill, date of birth, address and national insurance number as proof of my identity. I sent these things off to them three weeks ago.I have rung them to see if they have received my details and am always asked for my policy number, which I tell them I do not have. They assure me it is not a scam and will take between 10 and 20 days to get back to me. My friends have told me I was crazy to send my details off and that I will probably be cloned. I'm very worried, but when I call AbbeyLife, even though they have my details, they will NOT tell me what it concerns.Anyone else had one of these letters?

Personally I would be concerned about giving them the information that you have seeing as they contacted you first, surely they must know who you are?

It may be worth starting the free 10 day trial with experian (or similar company) to make sure loans/creditcards are not being applied for in your name http://www.experian.co.uk/

    Hope it helps!

Ring the number on here and demand they give you an answer as you're very worried.

Tell us the address where you sent your details to, so that we can be careful. Is it the true address of abbey life. Could someone else have already used your details with Abbey, and now Abbey are checking. Unless abbey send your details back with 24 hours and give a decent explanation I would warn your bank about the situation thet you might be impersonated. Years ago I bought an investment with scottish widows and for 10 years they sent my annual reports to another guy with the same name, in the same town. HE NEVER told them it was wrong. Then, if memory serves me, Abbey took over the scottish widows investment arm and I asked for an update.....
  • The address I sent my details to for Abbey Life was as follows. Abbey Life Assurance Company, 100 Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth,BH8 8AL

I was told they would reply in 10 to 20 days....it has been 3 weeks so far.

As that is the correct address I would relax, and just follow up with a letter asking why they wanted all this. Also ask them to remove you from all marketing lists since you have no policy with them. I guess they have a policy or many, with a lost beneficiary, and wondered if it was you. Perhaps a relative died and you have inherited the proceeds? but unlikely.

well 20 working days is 4 weeks. but think you answered your own question in the first post with 'i don't have a policy with them' so bet is its marketing or you have already been phished with someone setting a policy up in your name in order to say set up a new driving licence or such like you really have now opened up the can of worms now just for asking.
But personally would never ever send off details as there are so many scams now. If it sounds suspect even slightly just ignore. or even better just phone them up withholding your number as ask to speak to there fraud department and check its real they should be able to say they sent something out and why such proof is required.

I can't understand why you would send off details if you don't have a policy with them? Do you have a policy with someone else who may have been taken over by Abbeylife?

  • Yes, I do have a policy with another company but I've checked and they haven't been taken over by Abbey Life. When I rang Abbey Life, they were very polite and said that they needed me to send proof of identity before they could send whatever they want to send to me. They also said that the last address they had for me was in 1994.

Could you be the beneficiary of a life insurance/assurance policy - perhaps one you were not aware of? They would not divulge this information until they had confirmation of your personal details, so could be a reason for requesting the documents.

I hope it's for an ok reason, such as this. Good luck!
