  • Just a thought but would your local church help? Our local church has a "help fund" basically you contact the minister (we are Methodist although haven't been for years) and let them know roughly your curcumstances, doesn't matter whether you attend church or not. At our church they usually put together a hamper and a few gifts, worth a try. Also the church do an Xmas meal on Xmas Day I think it is.

If you can make it cheaper do so. If it's not reduced, in Primark, off ebay or free I can't have it

I had a freind in a similar situ. She went to citizens advice as she was on benefits and they arranged for her to pay just one pound a week to her creditors.I don,t know how it works or all the ins and outs, just that it was sorted for her.perhaps making an appt with them will be good for you.I would also certainly get a different account so your food/bill money is not deprived.
  • Just wanted to say hi :hello: and hang on in there. Can you get to a CAB office? Are you entitled to any more benefits? As stated above you need a new bank account with a new compnay where you can put your benefits in to live off. After this you can begin to sort out the debts.

  • Hi

This time last year natwest closed my account when i couldn't pay back my OD. This was the day my wages went in and I had nothing. They did let me have a one off payment of my wages though. I'm sure i read on another post that they are not allowed to take all your wages off you and leave you penniless like this.

If you can go into your branch and ask to speak to the manager and explain the situation. If you can speak to a debt councillor before you go they might be able to clarrify the situation regarding taking all your wages and benefit from you.

Also once you've got some of your money back and opened a new bank account and caught your breath back look at reclaiming your bank charges back.

Good luck I'm sure you will be helped.

You poor soul (((huge hugs))) You must be going out of your mind with it all. So glad you posted, as people here can give you moral support as well as good ideas.

Re a new bank account, try Alliance & Leicester. We're recently opened new accounts with them, without an overdraft facility or credit card, and despite owing £80k+ they accepted us. If you can get a friend or relative to do the same then they give you £50, which you could really do with just now.

Re the children, it's nearly the end of term but could you get free school meals for them? Also try Freecycle for items for Christmas (https://www.freecycle.org). If you can get to the library have a look in the local paper and see if any charities are offering help, as well as going to the Social Services, tackling the Abbey (I'm so disgusted with their behaviour) and speaking to the Tax Credits people. What about Child Benefit? That goes in soon (every four weeks on a Thursday I think). Can you arrange to collect it in person from the Post Office or do they not do that any more?

As pp have said, your husband should be contributing towards the children. I know how difficult this can be as my stepkids' mother didn't pay us anything for over a year after the children had come to live with us, and even now she pays a pittance but at least it's something. I know the CSA is struggling rather atm, but in your situation I wouldn't hesitate to pursue your ex-husband for everything you're entitled to.

One last thing, refuse to speak to Abbey on the phone if they ring you, tell them simply that you require all communication to be in writing, thank-you, goodbye. If they persist in calling you then you can report them for harassment - there's a thread about that here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=3658053#post3658053

It will be hard work and gruelling, but you need to every scrap of help, advice and handouts that you can just now. It's a really awful time of hear to be facing this stuff, but slow and cranky though they are, there are systems out there to help. Keep posting.
If you can't be a good example, be a dire warning :D

Abbey will give the benefits money back as long as you prove that's what the money going in was.You will need to speak to someone like the Manager or a personal banker as the counter staff(ie me) won't be able to deal with it without authorisation.
As you really can't afford the mortgage can you think about taking in a lodger or selling the house and renting? You would get help with rent and council tax that way.
