Roof coveing on a single storey bay?

I have just bought a house built in 1879 that has a single storey bay with a free stone surround. it currently has a sand and cement roof to it which is shot and needs replacing. it also has a small pipe coming out of it into a soak away.
The neighbour has a very nice looking lead covering but I have been told to allow around £1k for this!! I am hoping to get it done for far cheaper and in fact do it myself but what alternative would i use?
Any advice greatly appreciated
thanks
Alex

I had a bay window roof re-leaded recently (upper storey).
Cost less than £500, including the scaffolding. Admittedly that was a part of a wider re-roof, but this bit was done separately because that bit of the roof was dripping water!0
