90% LTV mortgage + low credit rating - Halifax?

I have spoken to a financial advisor today re options as a first time buyer.
I have used experian to check my own credit rating previously and this showed a score of perfect, however, had an agreement in principle declined on a 95% ltv mortgage with skipton. In terms of credit, I have never defaulted etc, though have never borrowed much, only had a credit card for approx 7 months.
The advice seemed to be that Halifax were one of the most likely to accept my application, though in terms of product they are the most expensive and rates are highest.
Can anyone confirm or deny or add any further advice in terms of more 'flexible' lenders. I am happy to pay the higher interest for a couple of years if it means I am more likely to get my application accepted.
