Barclays does not use an external scoring company. They determine their own scoring depending on movements into and out of your account. They deduce how much debt they think you are already in, for example by the amounts of direct debits leaving your account and to whom they are being paid. For example a debit of say £87.46 is more likely a minimum repayment amount than an amount you would transfer to savings and from that they can calculate the balance outstanding on whatever facility you are repaying.
They also look at how long you stay overdrawn for and by how much; so even if you are within your overdraft limit you would have a lower score if you are overdrawn for 80% of the month to almost your full limit than being overdrawn 50% of the time for just say £100 out of a £500 o/d limit.
They look at how many direct debits you have in general and to other financial providers in particular as that indicates you're a "tart".
All this is compared to the income and other credits entering your account.
These are just a few examples.
Barclays is pan*s anyway. Go elsewhere. The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.0 -
Abbey do this as well. My daughter had a real battle to get a debit card on her account because of this. In the end they agreed to ask their underwriter for special permission to issue her a card even though her score was too low. They in fact did not reference to her savings account which had a good sum in it. They appeared to have ignored the fact that a lot of the debits from her account we in fact into her savings account.
I stood in the middle of abbey making a huge and very loud fuss. They also messed up because the person we had an appointment with ignored us so I made a fuss about that too. I complained to the manager about our treatment, again very loudly. Within two days my daughter's card had been approved and she now has a debit card.
I have come to the conclusion that all banks fit Milky-Mocha';s description.0 -
I had no end of trouble from the Halifax trying to get my Electron card upgraded to a Visa Debit, despite being a customer for over 20 years, so I left and got an account at Lloyds. Within 3 months I was given a 3-in-1 Visa Debit card no problem at all"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
