council tax?

i'm sure this has been mentioned on here somewhere before but can't spot it at the minute!
my partner and i are currently looking into buying our first home, we do have debts but these are under control and reducing quickly.
i already have a degree but am now studying for a second although this one is being paid for by my employer. i am doing a distance learning course.

does anyone know where i would stand in terms of council tax being a student but also in full time employment? also not sure if it makes a difference that my parter isn't a student, he is also full time employed. I lived with parents during first degree so managed to escape the confusion of council tax first time around!!

thanks

i think you'll still have to pay full council tax as you're still working. council tax is only not payable when everyone in the house is a full time student, as far as i am aware - but do check it out.

  • Suggest you check with your council - if they consider you as a full time student you should get 25% off your council tax as they disregard you in the household and will treat your partner as being a single occupier - however it will depend on how they view your course :)
  • Yeah, I too think you have to pay full whack. Sorry.

I have just been all through this with my husband who is now taking his first degree full time at college. We get a 25% discount. BUT, (how cross am I about this?!) because his term finished July and restarted with the optional honours part this September, he wasn't classed as a student during those 8 weeks. I had to fork out the full council tax for this period. I am fighting it like so fingers crossed!

This is both a)weird and b) not blinkin' fair! >:(

didn't want to start a new thread so will use this rather 'old' one :) same topic after all...

For a university student graduating this summer, when will s/he need to start paying council tax? Local council were quite vague with their answer but I suspect it will be from or after September?

    TIA

We get a 25% discount on council tax as my partner is a student nurse even though she is on a secondment and in receipt of her full wages. It is apparently all above board - you get a form from the college and take it to the council and bingo - 25% off!

You are only exempted until the official end date of your course, which may well be coming up quite soon. Your Council may have veen vague, but somewhere they will have a record of your end date from the information you sent them when you started. After this date, you will be liable for council tax. Suddenly they will not be vague, and will send you a bill.
