Is a colour scheme/theme needed?

I fancy having a simple low key wedding but with an enormous family on both sides its just not going to happen. I do however what things to be quite relaxed and fun. I had considered asking my bridesmaids to find a dress they liked in the same color that they could wear again. I don't mind if they are the same dress. Does this sound terrible, I have been to lots of weddings and everyone is very polished and well put together will this look rubbish. I want fun not tacky! Help

You don't need a theme or colour scheme - i went to one where everything was pastel colours which was quite nice as it tied it all together :)

We're not really having a colour scheme; the bridesmaids are in teal but that's just because we found a dress that suited them all (ranging in age from 14 to 27 and iin size from 6 petite to 12) and that would be appropriate for a November wedding. The teal won't feature anywhere else. We decided to embrace the time of year and the general feel of the wedding is autumn/winter, natural, rustic etc. Just go with what you like, it doesn't have to be matchy matchy!

No you don't need a colour theme and until joining MSE I had never realised that is is such a necessesity to some people. You also don't need favours, personalised invitations, gift lists, centrepieces or any of the many things which seem to have appeared recently.

To be honest the only things you need are a Groom/bride, a registered venue and a vicar/registrar....as long as you get those things thats what matters....how you dress or colour the rest of the "event" is up to you.....

    Hi,

We are getting married abroad so I'm not worried about a colour scheme. I will be getting my bridesmaid dresses from high street shops & hopefully lovely summer dresses they can ware again, as long as they look bridesmaidy i'm happy. Not worried if they have the same dress either. I think we have choosen brunt orange cravats for the grooms party so I will try & match my flowers into this & maybe a bit of orange in my jewelery but other than that, we won't be having a real colour scheme.

tbh I think it looks far better to have a mix and match approach than to try and clone BMs of different sizes and ages. I've just seen some photos where the BMs (6 adult) were all dressed and with hair all identical. It worked as they were in a very striking colour and all impossibly slim and gorgeous - reminded me a bit of a colourful version of the 'Addicted to Love' video for those of you old enough! But I've seen pics where there's been 4 or more BMs in very different heights and sizes all dressed identically and it just somehow didn't go so well IMHO.
I think it's a lovely idea to give them a colour and let them choose a dress - they'll feel more comfortable being in something they like and that will show in the pictures too.
There's loads of stuff that some people think you 'need' to make a perfect wedding but matching everything isn't it

I'm so glad someone else brought this up I was worrying about the same thing. I've come to the conclussion though firstly consider how much this is going to cost. Secondly and more importantly are you feeling you should have a theme be it colours or otherwise because everyone else has and therefore you should or because you generally like the idea. If it's the later think about your venue and what would work there. something just won't be feesable also factor in who is going to do this and how much time and money you have including how much time you are allowed at the venue to set everything up. if you want a theme you could go for colours you like or somewhere you been together or enjoy doing together. you could think about hertage if your in to that when I use to work in a garden centre I had someone enquire after plants that could be used as table decorations to reflect both english and french hertiage and i suggested lavender. Hope this helps and remember as my mum keeps reminding me this is yours and you OH day you have to do what right for you and what you both feel happy and comfortable with.

Short answer to the title question - No. :D

I've seen photos of bridesmaids in dresses which matched in colour (or a colour range eg all blues) but had different styles, where the dresses were similar styles but one blue, one green, one yellow, one purple etc, and where they were obviously just given a fairly vague remit and sent off to choose what they wanted.

If you are after a relaxed wedding then mismatched bridesmaids is a good way to get the relaxed vibe, so to speak.

People on here are probably sick of me mentioning this website by now :o but have a look at www.offbeatbride.com - it's all about having your wedding how you want it and so that it reflects you and your fiance, rather than blindly following convention.

I'm another fan of no colour schemes, I'm having a reaxed wedding, girls are wearing floral dresses from Oasis, boys can wear what ties they want, and I get a rainbow bouquet!

You don't need a colour scheme at all! I've only ended up with one because i was making my own flowers and i had to choose the colour of the felt and after that it just made sense to match. I actually wish i didn't have a colour scheme, it would've made my life a lot easier!
