How do you find a reputable solicitor for conveyancing

My son's buying a house in Reading. Put in an offer yesterday which was accepted but doesn't have a solicitor. His friend recommended one they used up in Aberdeen. I would have thought a local solicitor with local knowledge would be preferable. However, how do you go about finding one fairly quickly. Any suggestions welcome

  • Well I'm looking for a solicitor too, I'm just outside Edinburgh. However, we CANNOT use an English solicitor, so I doubt you'd be able to use a Scottish one. Plus the fact it'd be better if it was local, incase you needed to goto the office etc.

  • Ask the estate agent. The estate agent will probably get some commision from the solicitor.

  • It is important to point out that solicitors who are recommended by the estage agent may not be as independent as you might like. My advice is to get a recommendation from someone you know who has moved recently.
  • Hi I ask the Law society to give you the names of some law firms that do conveyancing work. You don't really need a local firm as eveything can be done by telephone or post. It is often cheaper to shop around, look further afield and get a number of quotes. You can even see if a particular firm will match the quote you have. Conveyancers are likely to be more expensive than a law firm with a conveyancing department. Also the bank may recommend a firm but I have found the costs are more than when I find one myself.

You can get the names of the solicitors in your area of choice by going onto the Law Society website and selecting the option "Choosing and Using a Solicitor". There is then a comprehensive search facility that will give you the nearest 100 to the area you choose.
