ummm, not really -since avast outperforms it in almost all tests I've seen including the one linked on this page, unsure what you could be basing this on?
OP would be well advised to stick with what they're used to, ALREADY have installed and is generally well regarded as a highly effective AV.
Why you'd go replacing it with some new inferior junk* you were flogged for £1 is beyond me

I now have Firefox with Adblock plus, Spywareblaster and Avast Free. Windows Firewall. Just one small thing I am now sure how to subscribe to Malware Domains when I added Adblock Plus. I seemed to have missed the chance. Is there any way of adding this?
Just go to the bottom, in the miscellaneous section of the list of Adblock plus subscriptions:
http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions
Just click on the "Subscribe: Malware Domains" bit on that page. Also it appears to work on this page too, so can just click that instead0 -

Since I'm in the need for a new anitvirus package myself I have been looking at many of these threads. What I can't work out is the business model for the free AV providers. Some have been going for years so it's obviously working for them but how do they keep going and is anything compromised? Lining the pockets of the big boys goes against the grain but the cynic in me says you don't get owt for nowt, so what's the catch?Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0

The free AV providers usually also have one or more paid-for product with more bells and whistles.0

no catch at all/ paid-for versions would be considered the sausage by some -- so the free version is an invitation to purchase at some point/ also, some of the free ones carry ads and pop-ups/ and reminders and snags ... / not so the brilliant Avast* (and i use the free version )
*the best anti-virus package in the entire world ? yes !BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!
