Hello
I have an old laptop (Acer) which was loaded with xp but although the hd is still working fine the laptopps pretty well broken so unusable.

My question is,is there anyway i can buy a usb case for the old laptop hd running xp and get it to work on my windows 7 laptop via the usb (new laptop is packard bell windows 7 64 bit)

Reason being i want to run some car diagnostic software which is specific to windows xp and although i ve downloaded vmware virtual software i would have to buy a copy of xp to install(which ill do but id just prefer to use my old laptop hd if possible??

Thanks in advance :)

you can use virtual pc and disk2vhd to load an image of the disk into a virtual machine, both free

If it's just a one off, you don't need to buy XP, as you get thirty days before you need to activate it anyway.

Good point in the short term but its really an ongoing thing to monitor my car as and when faults arise.

    thanks for the suggestion

in theory yes, disk2vhd creates a disk image (.vhd) of the old hard disk, and virtual pc will launch it as a virtual pc.

it may or may not work, and the software you have may not work fully under a virtual pc environment if it requires hardware to plug into the laptop for diagnostics, but worth a try
