One of my maxvalue adsl powerline adaptor things has just broken. They're pretty pricey to buy, so I wondered if anyone knew of:
a) one that is cheap, yet compatible with mine
b) alternately, a cheap and reliable alternative
Thanks!

If you're referring to powerline Ethernet adapters they start at around £35 a pair. Should your ISP have provided you with a wireless router, USB wireless adapters can be had for under a tenner apiece though these are arguably less reliable than a physical connection.
Alternatively, just get longer cables.0 -
If this is homeplug you are talking about all the 85Mbps ones are interchangeable but will not work with the 200Mbps ones. I'm not 100% sure if the 200Mbps ones are all compatible with each other or not. The cheapest alternative is an ethernet cable.0
