Is there anymore I can do to fix this spoof (?) email issue

Options
Got a hotmail email addy which I check online. Received some bounced back emails today saying I had emailed various contacts with either blank email/spam link. Am obviously mortified as I havent sent anything and nothing is in email sent folder.

Have deleted all contacts in hotmail, changed password, run AVG (found nothing) downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, which found this:

Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\WhiteSmoke (PUP.Whitesmoke) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Registry Values Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Registry Data Items Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Folders Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Files Infected:
c:\Users\Mum\AppData\Local\microsoft\Windows\temporary internet files\Content.IE5\OIGRYYJT\wsimail10103[1].exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Ran Malwarebytes again, shows as being clear. Ran Spybot, deleted any adware.

Is there anything else I should do? Have looked this email thing up on the net and some people who've had similar questions say account is hacked, some say spoofed, some say worm. I did receive an email similar to this from someone in my contacts a few weeks back and did open it (but didnt click on link inside), which makes me think I may have a virus/worm, but seeing AVG doesnt see it am not sure.
Is the malwarebytes quarantine enough to have fixed this?

Thanks

  • download and run Hijackthis. and then paste the results into (https://www.)hijackthis.de - that scans the log and tells you what to remove

    Sounds similar to something that was happening with my hotmail account. I tried everything you tried, but to no avail.

    In the end, a friend suggested I simply change my password (?) and it worked!! Honestly,no problems since :) Might be worth a try x

    *Sorry, just noticed you've already tried that* I'll just go an slap myself to wake myself up a bit!!
  • Run this as a second opinion scanner. http://dl.surfright.nl/HitmanPro35.exe it is exceptionally good and quick (will only take 5 minutes).

    Also, if you haven't already, change all your online passwords for all services.
    If my post helped you in anyway, please hit the "Thanks" button! Please note any advice I give is followed at your own risk!

    1. Run this Temp File Cleaner in case other malware is present in the temp folders, http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/.
    2. Hijackthis log (save to desktop, right click & run as admin) and post here. Please don't use HijackThis.de and "delete everything they say" as they frequently will flag good entries, and miss bad ones - they are only worthwhile as a last check in case you missed something, and can interpret what you are reading.
    3. HitmanPro as above.
    4. As Whitesmoke (sometimes a legitimate program, but often appears for no apparent reason) is often associated with a rootkit, you would be advised to run TDSSkiller (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe) or Avast Rootkit scanner (http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm)

    Change your passwords, but even the changed passwords should be considered temporary until you can be sure you are clean of infection.

    Bunshopbandit - Yes I view hotmail on the net. None of the emails are in my sent folder. I received 5 bounce back emails, but in total it must have emailed itself to about 12 contacts (I dont have many friends lol). password has been changed. My email doesnt display images in emails unless I click on 'show content' on the email itself.

    I used hijack this and analyzed the results which came back ok. Hitman found some tracking cookies and riskware which has now been deleted/quarantined.

    Thanks to everyone for your help :)

    Ran Old Timer and Kaspersky Rootkit Killer which found nothing...guess I must be pretty clear now then. Am changing all passwords for everything now as well. Dont think I can do much more. Thanks to all!

    Might be worth doing a last scan, say Eset online scan http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner

    Fair amount of bloat, with toolbars and unnecessary autostarts - might be worth looking into that (https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849)

    you ran tdsskiller?

    there's evidence of a rootkit in that log, either scan to remove it or backup data and restore to factory settings
