cost of moving a gas/ electricity meter

We are about to start an extension on our property. The builders have told us that we will need to have our box moved which contains our gas and electricity meter as its currently on the side of the property ,which is just where our new hallway wil be. We have no idea how much this is likely to cost or if we actually have to do this legally as We would be happy for it to remain inside where it is.Any advice greatly appreciated :O)

We checked a few years ago, I seem to remember you get an information pack from the local suppliers for gas (transco) and electricity, who will give a price per meter based on the distance to be moved + extra if you want the covering reinstating. I guess the need to have it moved will depend on exactly what works are planned.

You can contact your gas supplier to arrange this or approach your gas transporter directly..see their website.

Your gas transporter depends on what area you live in.

Moving of gas supplies should be factored into the costs of any extension.

It is not permitted to build over/or contain within a building,a live gas service.

The local authority building control inspector should be up to speed with this if/when he visits.

You need to enquire now due to the lead time for such works to be programmed.

For example, see here although NG may not be your transporter...

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
