Campervan/Motorhome Insurance for 6 months

I use my Campervan for less than 6 months of the year (its 23 years old). My insurance company says I cannot insure for only 6 months due to new legislation. I read an article on MSE which states that if the vehicle is declared as Off-road, and is kept Off-road (SORN) it does not require to be insured and also it does not apply to Northern Ireland (I live in N. Ireland by the way). Can anyone please advise me on what the truth is. Thank you :)

It is certainly true that if the vehicle is SORN'ed then it does not need to insured - but of course it has to be kept off a public road. This has changed in the last couple of months. Sorry I really don't know about NI.

How does this affect a vehicle used only in the summer?

If you have a vehicle that is not insured, but which is still taxed you could face a penalty. This includes motor caravans, motorbikes and classic cars – all vehicles that people sometimes leave uninsured for part of the year.

What if you have a personalised registration on your vehicle?

You should inform your insurance company if you change the registration number of your vehicle at any time. If you do not you could receive an Insurance Advisory Letter (IAL) letter to say your vehicle is not shown as insured.

Where does the new law apply?

The new law will apply in England, Scotland and Wales. It will not apply in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
