I normally work in a fuel station (on Mat Leave) When you buy a battery from us you have to leave your details in the diary which means that you can bring it back to us, and depending on which battery it was you either have a year or two of guarantee. Take it back to where it was bought from, it should be covered as it's "not fit for purpose" you should expect much more than 4 months use out of the battery!! if you can prove purchase if they dont have our (ahem) very (un)efficient diary scheme, such as on a bank statement you may even be able to get a refund at the shops discretion!

Edit - whoops just reread.... its not the battery thats packed up.... its the car!!! Batteries arent cheap, at a guess it'l prob be upwards of £60 when you bought it so a tenner is a bit tight especially as he has already had a full tank of fuel too. I'd prob charge him half the purchase price and tell him you'll help him if he needs to return it due to problems if needed

thanks for your help, we have decided to just scrap car and been done with it, its been a pain from start to finish, bloke in garage is going to give us £60 was £80 but that was keeping tax disc, last car we scrapped i think we got £60 for, its a shame cos battery not very old and it has alloy wheels but with no buyer :( tbh i would rather ditch car than let bil have something for nothing.

Where I live scrap yard will give £150 for your car. That's what I got and £62.50 back on the road tax.

You should phone around a few scrap yards (I know our local newspaper has plenty of classified ads for scrap cars wanted), £60 scrap sounds very low.

The battery (and indeed the petrol) is of no use to you, and has pretty much no resale value, so if it were me, I'd give it to a family member free of charge - at most I'd say "buy me a drink!" I think you are being a bit tight tbh.

Our local 2 will collect it for you and pay between £120 and £180 depending on size of car

I'd take the battery off and the alloy wheels and sell them. The battery needs a good 24 hr charge and it will be fine.

£50 for the wheels at least, if all 4 tyres are good and £15 for the battery.
