3 mattresses down, still too warm!

Hi all,
You may remember a couple of months or so ago I was moaning about buying a new mattress, and finding them too warm.
I thought I'd put a plea out as I go through more mattresses and protectors, to see what anyone could recommend! I've had 3 now!!!!
I'm on a 5 tog quilt now too, started off before all this with the old bed on a 13.5 tog.
To sum up,
I bought a new mattress in January, and found the surface got too hot and would wake me up, and keep me awake.
It was a Dorlux 1000 pocket sprung, and I was advised it could be to do with Reflex Foam within the mattress.
I sold it on ebay and bought a Kozeesleep Duchess 1500 Pocket Sprung mattress which does not have reflex foam.
This didn't make any difference, and was still way too hot.
I swapped that back with the shop fortunately (http://www.themattressemporium.com - good service.)
And decided to get a back to basics one - the La Romantica Elitta, which is a coil sprung one at a quarter of the price of the Duchess.
I find this mattress FAR more comfortable in terms of laying on, the Duchess was much too firm.
However, the problem is still there!!!!
I've tried wool protector, Outlast, and just now this gizmo:
http://www.personalcooling.co.uk/templates/page_01.php?cfp=page:SF0101&category=36
Which is actually scarily good at keeping cold.
5 hours later though, its seeped through the heat to the bed and back again, and I'm still warm! Good try though.
Bear in mind that if I stay in ANY bed other than these 3 I've bought, I'm absolutely fine. I've just returned back from Cuba where I got to test drive 2 more beds at the hotel - even in those temperatures, better than my bed at home!!!
My conclusion is drawing to the surface material of the mattress rather than the fillings - it can take minutes to warm up if I don't have protectors and things on.
I was wondering about trying a cotton covered mattress as a last ditch attempt before I go round stealing mattresses from sides of roads...
This one:
http://www.mattressman.co.uk/snuggle_beds/mattresses/mattresses/king_size/P7197S31395L/king_cotton_natural_collection_.aspx
Is cotton covered and and also has cotton fillings.
No refund if all is bad though.
I notice Kozeesleep do a dark blue one that's cotton covered, but is designed for care homes, hotels and what not, and was wondering if the comfort wouldn't be all there?
Thanks for reading!

Why don't you ask the hotels etc where you've stayed what sort of mattress theirs are? I work in the holiday cottage business and we are frequently asked this sort of thing, where we get bedding etc from, even what washing powder we use.
For myself I can't offer any advice, I just get the cheapest mattresses from Argos and never had a problem, though I live in a freezing house and my elec blanket goes on every night. You might find a bedstead type of bed better than a divan type, fresh air can then get right under it, rather than a prob with the mattress.0 -
Hi Eliza,
good thought, alas it's already on a slatted base.
When I bought the pocket sprung mattress, I had to buy extra bits of wood to create less of a gap between each slat - I've even tried removing these new slats in desperation recently, but it made no difference to heat.
I feel pretty sure it's related to the covering rather than any filling related issue...0 -
Could it not be that your room is just to warm. My partner gets really hot in bed so we have a 3.5 quilt, cotton quilt covers and sheets and he has a fan blowing all night long. We also found it better when we changed to a kingsize bed.0

Hi
Went through the same issues as you. Had a Dunlopillo for years & got a great nights sleep, but felt it was time to change. So I bought a new Dunlopillo Coronation, woke boiling after an hour or so & had to stay out of bed to cool down. Tried mattress protectors, Outlast, Coolmax etc, nothing worked. Gave up & bought a Hypnos thinking it was something in the Dunlopillo Latex, again same thing, just too hot, so replaced that. Found a Dunlopillo, the same as I had originally made in 2008, but unused, this is ok, so I think something has changed in mattress manufacture & I am allergic to what they now use, maybe you are too.0 -
thanks for the replies.
It's not related to the actual temperature, it's purely down to my body heat warming up something over a couple of hours or so and waking me up with the uncomfortable sensation of laying on something warm. It's not that I'm particularly warm myself even at that point.
Drayton - everyone I speak to think I've gone loopy - you're the first person I've spoken to that has had similar issues!
You're buying expensive latex mattresses too...
Did you contact Dunlopillo about the before/after effect? Maybe they could reveal (although probably wouldn't) why there's a difference.
Maybe there's no hope then for me then!
I've spent 9/10 nights at some point on the floor either on airbed, settee cushions or bare floor... since January....0 -
Sykyalker 1 - No did not speak to Dunlopillo or Hypnos, just decided to buy what I had previously, they stopped production in 2008, so got lucky. I had lost so much sleep and spent so much on toppers, protectors, outlast climasmart and multiple tyopes & togs of duvets etc. The only thing that helped me was buying an older mattress & switching from a divan base to a slatted frame.
For me the bed itself remained relatively ok, but I boiled, laying on my back was best, but I still woke continually, alweays boiling hot, Good luck in your search, I would love to have an answer & it will be a long time before I replace my mattress again0 -
I don't know if it helps but...
I get night sweats, I wake up in the middle of the night and am gym-type covered in sweat, end up having to change my sheets, wash, change my PJs or whatever else I'm wearing. I've never worked out why. I started having these on my recovery from anorexia and back then in hospital recovering with other anorexia sufferers who had the exact same experiences, night sweats seemed to be something everyone weight gaining suffered with but for most others they stopped when people reached thier maintanance weight.
I didn't however and continued (as a small minority do) to have night sweats every night, they don't tie in with any particular foods, do seem to vanish if I lose any weight, don't seem at all affected by the outside temperature, if I have a fan on or weather or not I have cotton or a cotton-polyester mix sheets, applying deoderants (had some luck with the Sure Maximum support but I really do sweat everywhere: my calves sweat and are covered in water, my head sweats!!) showering before bed in cool water makes no difference.
I have always wondered if it was something hormonal, being that as soon as my periods returned (back when I was weight gaining in hospital) it was near enough the same time I got the night sweats. On relapses and recoveries the same has been proven. It could just be a coincidence but I really can't think of anything left to try. Losing weight does seem to be the only fail-safe thing that stops them for me though which is unfortunate given my history!
Other ideas I was suggested was some sort of allergy to my bed, to dust or even to what I was wearing, this didn't seem to make sense though as I don't eat a whole load of food groups, (I used to when they were happeneing, I just don't now) I don't eat a whole load of additives too and again, no difference to when I used to but as someone medical suggested this to me if you do have the motivation to (its hard!) maybe worth a shot for a month or two? An ioiniser or products that deal with air allergies however may work out very expensive though.
My mum wondered if I was having an early menopause! (Which is why I wondered about hormones) but seeing as its been 10+ years on and off now, I don't think so.
I would suggest asking your GP for a hormone test or if they have any ideas but when bedding comes into it, I don't know how much this is going to make a difference and worry for you that it could end up becoming very expensive to work this out.0 -
Have you tried using a lightweight pure down or pure silk duvet? I know you say that the heat is where you are touching the mattress, but it will be affecting your whole body. I always overheat when I use a synthetic duvet.
Also, you can get pure cotton thick mattress covers from John Lewis, which logically would be exactly the same as the expense of a mattress with cotton wadding/cover.0 -
I don't think it's anything wrong with me, as I'm happy as larry snuggled up in a big duvet on any other bed, even now...
Having said that, my girlfriend doesn't feel any of the problems I'm feeling with all this, and her side of the bed is just as warm.
I have Egyptian cotton sheets and duvet covers, so don't think there's much to gain from upgrading past there.
I'm not sure if just a cotton protector will do the trick - it's different to a cotton covered mattress, in that the heat can pass through the whole mattress better, but the protector isn't going to stop that build up underneath still on my current mattress.
The cool pad gel protector I received the other day (link in the earlier post) is actually insanely good, if you suffer hot flushes. It is actually cold for a long time - in fact, ironically, laid on it for half hour last night I had to get up and put a duvet under me as it was too cold!!! lol.
Maybe I'll keep on with the pad for a bit. Just need to put a few layers between me and it.0
