It's amazing you parade the fact that it's the 3rd largest employer in the world as if that is to its credit. It's a disgrace that the third largest employer in the world is in a country with a population which is around 5% of the countries in which the two bigger employers are in, India and China.

And then you have the gall to say that it's great, because you guys pay taxes.

Fool - if it wasn't for the fact OUR taxes pay your salaries, you wouldn't have an income to pay those taxes.

Follow it through right to the end bendix. Anyone who receives their income solely from the state does not pay one net penny in tax, either direct or indirect, as every penny they receive has come from the state. It's a book keeping exercise.

I am not saying what they (some of them) do is without value to society as a whole but they don't 'pay' tax in to the system.

"I'll be paid £22k for my full time role." I never had a "role" I had to make do with a job.

Do you know that tax payers also pay for schools, further education, police forces, the army, government.....the list goes on.

But your rite, f### it. I mean do we even need any of this stuff!
The NHS will be there when you or your family need it the most. As someone has already pointed out, all members of these organisations pay tax. Everyone pays a relevant percentage of tax yet you seem to think you have more rights as a tax payer than those working hard and paying into their pensions. Its not all a bed of roses working for the NHS and maybe the pension is a way of making up for it and encouraging people to want to work for them. Very small minded.

Anyway, to the OPs question. The new NHS pension is no longer a final salary one but i still think its worth it. If you dont live past 65 i see your point. If you dont plan on having children then its money for you and your hubby to enjoy in the here and now but if you did, i think you would then regret not having the pension for you and your hubby to enjoy your old age! It also cant be dipped into easily. Sooner or later and ISA could.

    .

Yes, there's a need for an NHS. But how that NHS can have grown so ridiculously unwieldy as to be the third largest employer in the world is a national disgrace, and testament to its innate inefficiencies.

Let's get this into perspective. It is the third largest employer in the world, after the Peoples Liberation Army in China (population 1.35 bn), the State Railway Corporation in India (population 1.2bn).

The population of the UK is, what? 60m.

    It's totally ridiculous.

@katie1234. See my post #42. You don't, if all your income comes from the state pay anything net into the tax take. It's simply an accounting trick. You think tax & NI is taken from your gross salary - it isn't, because where did that gross salary come from in the first place ? The only people who pay tax are those in the private sector who do not derive their income in any way from the state.

That is what I expect given the taxes I pay.

I'm working hard and paying into (two) pensions. I don't think I have more rights than any other tax payer.

It's not all a bed of roses working anywhere. Why is the NHS special or unique? And why is the difficulty of a job related to an argument on how much I should subsidise your retirement by? If 'you' (intended generally) paid in enough yourself I wouldn't have to. Why should I pay for your pension? Are you happy to contribute to mine?

    More explanation required.

If the average tenure is 1 year or 25 years how does that change your figures? Without the detailed information it's meaningless.

Not my figures. Take your complaint to the paper :-)
