Well, when I got down to see Mam, her door was closed but no noise from inside. When I opened the door, the room stunk and it was very hot in there which made it worse. Mam was lying almost flat, diagonally across the bed, her feet at one corner and her head at the other, and she was looking distressed. She looked up at me with panicky eyes and said it was all wet, the bed. I straightened her legs and put her feet back up on the pillow they are supposed to be on, and then straighted her head and shoulders, and sat the head part of the mattress up so she was sitting up more. She kept saying it was all wet. I checked the sheet and it seemed OK but the duvet cover was wet in places. She is doubly incontinent so wears a nappy-type pad and also has an absorbent pad under her in case of leeks. I settled her a little and went to get the carers. I asked if Mam had been changed recently, as I thought this might have been the reason for the smell. One carer said, oh, I changed her earlier, so I asked them to check her now, and asked if she had been shouting. They said she had been shouting since my brother left at 13.45 pm, and I said, so you shut the door on her!
Anyway, they came down, checked her and yes, she needed to be changed so they did it. I'd asked them to sit her right up so she was OK for her dinner, which they did. And when I went back in, one of them went to fetch a new cover for her as 'she keeps saying it is wet'. Wheh she was all sorted, Mam looked fine, sitting up alert. We chatted for a while and then they brought her oxtail soup which I had to feed her but she ate no bother and enjoyed. They had brought her a piece of madiera cake too, so I gave her a little piece and went to put ice cream on it and chop it all in together. she tucked into this herself, and then had 3 dunked biscuits and a cup of tea. All the while chatting and watching tv - she was oo-ing and arh-ing at Celebrity Cooks, laughing at Home to Roost and enjoying Heartbeat. After her meds & nebuliser, which she was happy to take, we watched to the end of Heartbeat and then I said I had to get home for my dinner and she said 'oh yes', so was quite settled when I left at 6.45 pm
This is the strain that my Sister is under, as this happens quite often 2 or 3 days a week and it is always the evening when she visits after work. They close the door on her room so they can't hear her or she doesn't upset other patients - you guess which one
P.S. the home prides itself in the care it gives, promising dignity for it's residents. It is actually a good home, having a very good rating after inspections  :eek:Mr 3Dogs 3-7-12
