Spark energy - help!!

Hello,

Just to bring you up to speed... 4 students for the year Sept 09 until June 10 were paying £175.81 a month (total of £1582.29)

We canceled in June with Spark. Returned in September 2010 with a bill of £300 for the summer months we weren't there - but the bills were registered to 'The Occupier' and not to any of our names.

We paid £300 of our bill off in February by online banking (yet Spark only deducted £150?!) After a lengthy phone conversation, they established we had in fact paid £300 and rectified this, but didn't know who we were, as the account hadn't been reopened.

The lady on the phone told us we were in credit in our last year's closed account by up to £700 and that the sum could be transferred to our new account. This was great until we received a new bill through (also addressed to The Occupier for £1146.29 ... for seven months of living)

On our latest statement, it says we pay £80.73 for electricity and £61.28 per month.

This seems extortionate as there are now three people in the house. We never use the heating, and we are hardly there.

The March bill period was from 18/06/2010 for some reason, rather than being from the 28/02/11 to the 31/03/11. The following month we just receive a monthly bill from 31/03/11 to the 30/04/11.

What is happening?!

Our rate for electricity is 20.420 p for 74 kWh and then there's a separate rate of 19.800 for 312 kWh.

Gas is 6.400 for 476 kWh and 4.450 for 627 kWh.

Its like reading hyroglifics - we genuinely do not know where we stand with any of this. The phone call was confusing. There's no uniformity to our billing and we are left with a fairly hefty bill for three guys who are never in the house...

Please give us some guidance!
Regards

bigbluc

Having perused the forums it turns out Spark Energy have a terrible reputation... Even when accounts are closed they continue to harass you for final payments... up to two years after you left them?!

Why aren't watchdog or consumer direct on to this company?

The price you're paying per unit seems extraordinarily high, about twice what they should be...are you sure they're correct?

That is the price per unit. As students we weren't even living in the property between the end of June and the end of September and got charged £300... which I'm unsure whether we can refuse to pay as we were still paying half rent to keep the property until the September.

Our account had actually been closed with Spark during the summer and the bills are addressed to the occupier and not to us. Is this their issue or ours?

The price is incredibly high according to everyone we've spoken to, and we've called someone out to take proper meter readings and no-one has turned up.
  • I just wanted to post and say I feel for you. In the same boat - they've sent me a bill for £950. I desperately want to switch, but I've heard that they are a nightmare for letting you switch. Constantly refuse your new energy company cos they say you are in arrears. :(
