Evening, please could anyone help me.
I have a toshiba laptop and I was just reading some stuff on the screen when lines appeared down the middle of the screen and then it just went grey, have plugged in an external monitor and the laptop is working okay so it looks like screen problems.
Does anyone have any idea how I find out if it is the screen, invertor or backlight that has gone as I have googled it but can't find out how you tell which it is, or if it could be anything else.
I really appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks in advance:)

If it's the inverter or backlight, you should be able to see what is on the screen very faintly - you will need to look very closely, and maybe move the screen around in different lighting.

Thanks for the advice. Okay tilted the screen at many angles and I can see blurred lines that run top to bottom and if I scroll down on a web page they change with and darkness but still remain blurred lines. Have also just checked in a dark room and the screen is definately lit up not sure if this is any help or not.

On an LCD screen, the display is almost unreadable without being lit up from behind. If the inverter or backlight has failed, then everything on the screen would be just the same as normal, but not lit up, and therefore hard to see - so you may be better looking in a light rather than dark room.
If you are seeing blurred lines, then it sounds like something else. It may be worth checking if the cable that connects the screen has come loose.

If the inverter failed, the screen would be black, not grey.

thanks for your help in narrowing down what is wrong with it, I was literally reading a thread on here then the screen went white with some pink lines down the middle and then they dissapeared, plugged it into external monitor as could still hear the processor working and found that the laptop was still running but with no display :( will look into checking cables later as never taken a laptop apart...
