Argos Product Return Grrrrr

In March I purchased an electric kettle for £34.99 from Argos. I paid using my Debit Card from the Nationwide.
It had developed a fault over last month or so. The switch off switch arcs and buzzes when you flick it sometimes and also the "automatic off when boiled" feature has malfunctioned leaving my small 9 x 9 kitchen full of steam.
I looked in the Argos catalogue and under the customer service section it says:
"If you've had the product for up to 1 year, we'll repair the product or, if that's not possible, give you a replacement or, if that's not possible, a refund".
Great so I looked out the original receipt. I took the kettle back to Argos this afternoon. Apparently the kettle was not available at Argos any more. OK I asked them to repair it. Apparently they do not repair it either. They asked if I wanted a kettle up to that value. I said no I may be able to get that model elsewhere. I then asked for a refund. They agreed to that. But since buying the kettle...... I changed my bank from the Nationwide to the Coventry Building Society. The Debit Card I now have is not the one I used to purchase the kettle with. Apparently that meant I could not have a refund. Instead I was offered gift vouchers!!! wooopsy dooo. So Argos are now tieing me to buying with them!!! Apaprently it is because "I could be anyone asking for a refund". I said if i had paid cash I could equally be anyone. I said why can you not credit my new Account Card, whether you do that or give me vouchers I am still getting some kind of payment but its wrong to gove me money I can only spend with you.
Anyway I had to go and get my Nationwide statement to prove without a shadow of a doubt that I was genuine. They then refunded the £34.99 to my Coventry First VISA debit card.
What an utter shower!
