Car trouble please help.

Hi guys

Sorry this is the wrong board, I am not sure which one to post it on. (If this is the wrong one please divert me):D

I bought a peugeot 207 (2007 plate) on the 1st September last year. (used saving, and sale of my old car) From a family run garage who deals with Fords, occasionally they have other makes there, hence me buying the peugeot. Bargain SO I THOUGHT!

Saturday was driving in the 3rd lane of the M1 all by myself 75mph and suddenly it started to lose power, ! popped up on my dash and I had to pull over to lane 1 until the hard shoulder turnt up. Omg this was awful it got down to 15mph then the hard shoulder appeared. Anyway AA came to my rescue and told me Cam belt snapped and valves looked damaged, I refused to be towed with him as he expected me to steer my car And I felt uneasy, so another AA guy came and put my car on the truck and I sat inside the truck. (luckily I am covered with AA)

Anyway, towed to the garage I bought the car from. And thankfully have a courtesy car (Ka 2002).

Anyway mechanic rung me this morning told me, Car was not fit for even a beast , Water pump damaged, valves damaged and cam belt snapped. £800 minumum to fix .

I have found my original receipt, and a 30 day warranty. But I swear I took out an extra year with it (But can't find proof). That is what I told the mechanic, and he was waiting for the office staff to come in to ask them and then let me know (as of yet not heard nothing).

Where do I stand? I do not have £800 just hanging around, And the reason for buying a newish car was to cut on mechanical issues. But my old car I never had any trouble with !!!!!!..

Not a solution, but if you google it, then it would appear to be a common peugeot problem with cambelts snapping on cars that aren't very old.

How many miles have you done in the 8 months you've had it?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Phone around a few car places and get other quotes. I have used kwik fit for my landrover for the last 3 years and found them to be very good indeed for costs and service. You better check though as others haven't had good experiences but seeing as you know what is wrong i would go there and ask them to change all that.

I told him to get on with the work, I need my car back asap, and I am sure the garage need their Ka back.

I just googled it, and yes very common problem. Will this always happen do you think? Or would it just be a one off as they were not appropriately done at the time?

Am really worried if it's not under full year warrenty, If not I am going to have to plead with them, Failing that ring daddy urgh.

    Thanks for advice guys

Once it's been fixed, it should reoccur. Ask how often you should have the cam belt changed. I had something similiar happen to me, albeit with an older car in the cold weather last year. I would go through your paperwork really thoroughly as if you don't have proof I am not sure that it was unfit for purpose if it worked for over six months. Might be worth speaking to the CAB, and yes, try pleading with the garage and their good nature.

Bad luck with the car and all the best getting it fixed. I think the motoring section might get you more answers :-)

You're not going to like this but:

    1. Cambelts are *wear and tear*......they are not covered by warranty.

    2. Doesn't matter how many miles you do/the car has done.....ALWAYS replace it at 4 years old or check your manufacturers handbook.

I'd suggest yours hasn't been changed since the car was new. IF it has, it will be written in the service book along with the mileage it was changed at , or some older garages tag the engine (brown paper tag)

Garage told me usually cam belt needs changing every 10 years. BUT It was the water pump that caused all the damage. It's a common problem with these cars apparently (according to google) I found and posted in the motor section.

Thanks for all advice folks :)
