cost of carpet

So i've bought my new little terrace house (yay to being a FTBer) and i've had to recarpet it all). We've got approx 50 sq meters of space and the total cost of carpet is going to be a grand.. That will include underlay and fitting.

Am I the only person that thinks that's a bit steep? We checked a few places, but why is carpet so damn expensive?

Well, that works out at £20/sq m, which compares well with engineered wood, for instance. Considering it's including fitting and underlay, I don't think that's a bad price, assuming you're getting a hessian-back, 80/20 wool carpet.

On the other hand, as has been pointed out on this board previously, most people are likely to get fed up with their carpet long before it wears out, so if you think you might fit into that category, and you don't want your carpet necessarily to last 10 years or more, you might find that a felt-back carpet (which wouldn't necessarily need underlay - don't buy rubber-back) with a higher percentage of synthetic fibres would do the job perfectly adequately.

Yes, it is. You paid about £20 a sq meter all in, which is about average I think, with underlay & fitting.

We had 1 bedroom & the stairs & landing (not the hall, thats wood) done a few months ago & that cost about £500 - £600 (can't remember now).

& I supplied the door bars as I didn't like their selection. That was for carpet underlay & gripper rods.

Laminate is far cheaper, & laminate underlay is far cheaper & you can fit it yourself.

  • We're getting 100% synthetic, yes, at about £20/sq m. Don't plan to have this house more than 10 years, but i want the house to look and feel nice.

I guess i'm just generally a bit miffed about the cost of renovating a whole house, especially after paying 200k for a terrace

    London is WAY too expensive

If it's a totally synthetic carpet, then that sounds a bit steep, TBH. I would have thought £12-15/sq m more likely, but then if you're in London, the cost of fitting etc will be higher, so maybe that's why.

Get used to it, love - houses are moneypits! Try to forget about the cost (but obviously implement MSE ways!) and concentrate on enjoying your house and the new life you're starting in it. Get the house the way you want it - you can always declutter and paint it beige when it's time to move.
