Exercising and an allotment

Hi all

I was just wondering, what do others do in terms of exercising and tending your allotment? Do you do additional exercise or do you think the allotment provides enough?

Just wondered really.

I have a prolapsed disc and working on the allotment kills me. But it gets me out of the house.

My helper who does the digging goes to the gym between. He does say it works different muscles.

Depends on your level of fitness, Digging and turning the soil over, Planting potatoes and digging them
    up will keep you fit.

Picking peas is about my limit.

I've never really thought of having and working on an allotment as a work out before! That makes me feel less guilty for not going to the gym now... you've really cheered me up! Thank you!! :)

I've just got a new allotment so have been digging, carting bricks around, hoeing etc. Am doing Weightwatchers and logging the activity points, gardening racks up loads. I lost 2lbs last week and am hopeful for the same this week, scales today are saying 3lbs, will see tomorrow. Without doubt the allotment is really boosting weight loss at the moment.

Think it helps if you sort of plan what you are going to do to ensure you get a good work out. It's easy to waste time wandering round aimlessly.

Well, I doubt I'd go to the gym or jogging or whatever with or without an allotment so perhaps it's just as well I have one, yes? As to how much exercise it provides well, who knows. Three hours of digging would be pretty good exercise, three hours of watering with a hose or planting seeds would be less. I suppose I could plan what I did on the allotment to give me the maximum exercise benefit but really, I'm up there to look after the crops, not exercise.

  • i have a disability - and although my allotments keep me active - i do have a few "body" issues from time to time - so i spend as much time sitting on my bench sipping beer as i do working - does exercising the elbows count ??? :rotfl:

I find that going to the allotment gives my arm muscles a good workout and they usually get less focus in a class.
