hiya learning to drive, funnily enough I've decided to take a complete break from alcohol for the time being as well, decided yesterday at about midday, so perhaps we can support each other when it comes to staying off the drink!!

I took fluoxetine for a time back about 10 years ago and found exactly the same as you – I'd go out for a party, drink a couple of glasses and I'd be embarrassingly gone, suddenly terribly drunk, I'd semi-pass out on the floor. It's obviously too much for the liver to process both drugs at the same time (or something). I think your decision is extremely wise. I'm not taking fluoxetine now, I just don't think drinking constantly even in relatively small amounts is good for me, I periodically give it a break for a couple of months and that's what I'm going to do. so best of luck to both of us!! no more  and plenty more :j :A

My father-in-law is a full blown alchoholic, it is the first thing he does when he get's in from work and the second thing in the morning at weekends (after spending ten minutes being bent over the toilet).

Fortunately he just goes very silly with it and doesn't get nasty, but it's a real shame to see what it's doing to him, both me and my wife, and her mum never drink now, not even one drop because of him (we've al been teetotal for about 7 years).

Unfortunately he won't admit it, and so won't do anything to help himself, when he get's ill, the Doctors say no drink, but alas he resorts to taking his tablets with the drink and wonders why it takes him 3 month to beat the common cold.

But back to the reason for posting, my wife was on anti-depressants a few years ago for a long time, and eventually she got so fedup with them she smashed them up with a hammer - said it was the best therapy she'd ever had and hasn't taken them since, so best of luck you all, I hope you come off them sooner or later.

• Indeed, I think that the no drink thing just saves any confusion with me, I cant drink so that's the end of the matter, no point saying I'll have 2 or 3 when I will end up having 12-13 then in town and drinking more.

It's good all around, saves me wasting time drinking and indeed the money side of things too!!
• Another victory for teetotalism, stopped by police tonight after pub, asked if i had been drinking, was pleased to say no, not at all. He said "good lad" and went through the insurance / car checks with HQ, all cleared and he sent me on my way.

Lovely!

To the OP,I really hope that you succeed with this and wish you all the luck in the world xx:T

IYou should also never just stop taking the tablets, you need to be weaned off by your doctor, if you just stop it can make you feel really dreadful and also it is very very likely to just fling you straight back into depression. I've been told all of this by my doctor. Essentially you need to talk to doctor about any major changes to your tablet taking.

I was on citalopram (anti depressant) for over 2 years and could not be weaned off them. Every time I tried to come off I would get the shakes, feel dizzy, be sick, sweat, shiver etc etc. This was with the doctors advice!! I just could not get off them. Then I found a magic cure!! (No i'm not tripping or drunk when I write this!!) Peanut butter! 4 slices of thickly spread peanut butter on toast every morning would stop the side effects of not having the tablets. After 6 months of on off trying to get ooff them with the doctors advice, I was off them in 2 weeks with Sunpat!!!! (I swear I am not making this up!!)

I've taken this from DoctorYourself.com to explain.....

Inside you, the essential amino acid L-tryptophan is broken down into anxiety-reducing, snooze-inducing niacin. Even more important, tryptophan is also made into serotonin, one of your body's most important neurotransmitters. Serotonin gives a feeling of well-being and mellowness, or as the Australians would say, "no worries." This is such a profound effect that Prozac, Paxil and similar antidepressants usually either mimic serotonin or artificially keep the body's own serotonin levels high. You can do the same thing with your food. And no one can tell us that beans, peas, cheese, nuts and wheat germ are toxic if you eat a lot of them!
Plenty of carbohydrates (starches) in your meals help tryptophan get to where it does the most good: in your brain. In order to cross the blood-brain barrier to get in, carbos are required. So cheese and crackers provides a better effect than the cheese standing alone. An egg or two on toast is better than just the egg. Beans, peas, and nuts already contain carbohydrate, so you are all set there.
Consider that five servings of beans, a few portions of cheese or peanut butter, or just one big handful of cashews provides one to two thousand milligrams of tryptophan, which will work as well as prescription antidepressants... but don't tell the drug companies. Some skeptics think that the pharmaceutical people already know.

Good luck with your battle hun, you will get through it!! Good for you on going teetotal too. It can only help! :T

My mind not only wanders .......... sometimes it leaves completely
• I've been on 20mg of fluoxetine for nearly 5 weeks now and I've only dared to have one can of cider, which was a week ago. I'd read up on the possible effects and it scared me stupid! I had a headache the day after the can of cider, so I don't know if it was that or, just a coincidence.

I'm at a birthday dinner tonight and I'm not going to drink at all. There will be some comment at the table, but i'll just say I'm taking some antibiotics and can't drink with them, nobody will say anything more.
