I found it very scary, too, and that was what made me give up completely. I couldn't handle the whole "fine one minute, gone the next" thing, with no giggly/tipsy stage in the middle (where you normally know that its time to slow down and stop...:p).

I didn't even remember that I'd been in hospital (in spite of the fact that I had walked out of A&E unaided after several hours on the drip and got into a taxi to come home, obviously accompanied by my hubby at this stage). I woke up in my own bed the next afternoon, panicking about oversleeping and missing work and querying why I had a plaster on the back of my hand  (where the drip had been) - when my husband pointed out that nobody had been expecting me in "after last night", I had no idea what he was talking about... I just felt like an idiot and a fraud (I would have felt a bit better if I'd had a raging hangover, but on 2 glasses of wine, I didn't even have that...!!).

  • With that in mind, and with respect to what happened on Sunday, I have decided to become teetotal until I have completely come off the tablets, I would like to know people's thoughts on what I am proposing to do here, messages of support etc.

You've got the right idea....best to stay off the drink....

I was on Seroxat for about 6 months back in 2001.....didn't work for me but I'm sure they may do for others...

Anyway, whilst being all judgemental about my brother drinking whilst taking AD's, I was doing exactly the same:o funny how you can lie to yourself sometimes:o

Anyway, I am giving up drinking at the mo...I'm only 6 days in so far...(I may not drink everday...or even a couple of times a week...sometimes I'll go a couple of weeks...but when I do...:o and I don't like what it does to me mentally/physically etc)

So, to get back to you....best to try and stay off the drink....the AD's are there to help you with your problems...the drink will only exacerbate them...and like other's have said...they do not go together!

    Best of luck XX
  • As my user name suggests, I too have been on ADs - on and off for 11 years actually. I must admit that I didn't give up alcohol whilst taking them as usually one glass of wine was enough to make me feel tipsy and I'd then have the desired effect!

As you have already said, you may be on them for quite a while as once you think that you feel better, you should stay on that dose for at least six months before contemplating weaning yourself off them.

I think that becoming teetotal is a very sensible idea and one that I would like to support you with.....as long as you can offer me the same in return.
I made a conscious decision to stop the booze in June as I was having a few health problems, which culminated in being diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in August. I'm currently receiving chemo, so obviously no drinking at the mo, but I intend to remain teetotal beyond this.
I don't have a problem on a day to day basis, but meals out and my brother's wedding in May, I do think I may be tempted.

I think it would be great if we, and anybody else for that matter, could offer some mutual support.
  • Of course I offer my mutual support to you s_chick, I wish you all the very best with your recovery from the illness that you have had.

Beyond that is down to you, I have small circle of close friends whom I have told about the tablets and they understand, they are shocked I need them but understand that I cannot drink.

I find it easy not to drink, strangely I always feel a bit ashamed at letting myself lose control like I used to on nights out, admittedly my 21st but still. I dont lose control in a bad way or anything, I just would rather not have the memory blanks and things.

But any support or advice I can offer people who just want to stay teetotal and not abuse their bodies, then I can try and offer it!

Will be hard over the festive period I think, but I am sure that in ourselves we can find the strength to overcome it.

    Yes, definitely!
Hubby and I usually share a bottle of buck's fizz while the kids are opening their pressies and then we have a bottle of wine with lunch. I think hubby's resigned himself to the fact that this just ain't gonna happen this year!
We're having Christmas lunch out this year, so I can stay on the soft drinks whilst everybody else can have whatever they like.

I'm glad you've got supportive friends. I'm sure you'll soon see that you don't need to have a drink to have a good night out ;)
  • I just take the car!

I never ever drink when I have the car, not even one, its a rule of mine!!

    Will save loads of money!!!

  • I sometimes wish that I had never started, I do and I don't, had some good times, but my hangovers recently have made me realise I can do without it.

Id just like to point out a few things which have helped me stay sober, if it helps one person, then fantastic.

The first thing is i have a real desire to want to do this, being the son of an alchoholic gives me a very strong emotional reason not too.

I know not everyone will have this, but maybe you have had someone in your family or friends circle, whos live drink has affected.

There is also the health aspect as well, there is the thing to be careful of not drinking too much coke or whatever when you are out, full of sugar lol

Also as people have said, alchohol is a depressant, which is ironic as people associate drinking with having a good time, which after being out seeing all the subhuman behaviour by drunken people I see it from a different angle.

I personally have no problem with other people drinking, they seem to think that im on some health rampage and will pester them all night, which isnt the case.

Everyone can make there own decision, and i leave them too it, its also does make you more interesting as people bombard you with questions such as why dont you drink, what made you stop, whatever else, then you can use that to talk about whatever you want lol.

Its funny to tell people that i dont depend on alchohol to have a good time :)
