I worked for a recruitment agency and I used to always disagree with them advertising full time jobs avaikable when even the people who were already on their books were struggling to get full time work from this particular supermarket, they just advertised in anticipation for the work picking up.

Quite frustrating especially for me who was having to deal with abrupt candidates on the phone and rightly so!

It is VERY annoying. I keep seeing the same vacancies advertised time and time again in the local press/website only to be told the vacancy has gone - hence it is just a ploy.

I agree there should be something in place to limit or prevent this mis-advertising. It wastes valuable time when in the current economic climate time is valuable when tailoring your applications to vacancies.

I'm sure the government love it as it makes it look like there's more jobs available than there actually are. I don't know if the ASA can rule on advertising a non-existent job.

You will be happy to know that an Statutory Instrument around October last year removed the requirement for agencies to identify themselves as such. I haven't noticed many doing this which shows how old their tactics are.

Agencies are ALLOWED to advertise non-existent jobs, if by their own expertise that they believe its probable that such vacancy will open up in the not so distant future. Government loves this distortion of the labour markets for obvious reasons. Agencies get away with listing fake jobs because predicting the future isn't easy... a month is quite a long time (many new businesses can grow and hit the wall) so within 3 months a job that was likely to be there might not be there due to changes in the labour market.

I think there is no excuses. Only advertise a job position that exists!!!

I did speak to one agency chap a while ago about this, He said that what sometimes happens is that an agency will book a slot on a website for a job to be adverised. They'll book, say, 3 months. If the job happens to be filled within those three months the advert will still stay on the website because the agency has paid and there's no benefit to them in getting it removed.

    !!!JOBCENTRE PLUS SCAM!!!

If you are a jobseeker you must eye up the advantages and disadvantages of agency work.

Under law when you register for an agency - in effect it is like you applying potentially for ALL their vacancies. It is not merely an job advertisement in regards to benefit sanctions.

If an agency alerts you of a job vacancy and/or invites you to an interview, even though you are not successful yet in the recruitment process the notification is deemed a "job offer". You do not have to apply or express any interest in any notification from an agency for it to be a job offer. The application for such goes back to the registration at the agency on the assumption you are willing to accept anything.

If an agency rings you up at 8.15am and tells you there is work from 9.30am to 12pm - regardless if your jobseekers agreement doesn't say immediate start (unless of a caring responsibility) - you would have to accept.

Once you have a job offer, its rare to rely on your Jobseekers Agreement because you waivered your rights away by applying for the job (in this case registering for the agency). This is a big scandal in itself. This said, agency work can be beneficial to many people, also Jobcentre Plus might not find out (remember you must report changes in circumstances but aren't obligated to disclose this info).

Thought I would let people know this little known fact.

I have often heard the allegation that recruitment agencies "make up" jobs to "get people on their books". What advantage is it to the agency to do this?

so that maybe when a job comes in they have you on their books and no one elses possibly if you have only registered with a few

I found a job the other day

    this one:

    http://www.essentialemploy.co.uk/job-detail-accounts-payable-officer-607775

To by pass the agency I googled part of the job spec and found this

    http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/jobs/Documents/Job%20Information%20Pack%20CHA226.pdf

if you read the agency advert and the city of london spec points 1-6 they are word for word the same so I emailed the HR team at the City of London and they told me this is a scam job and not one they are advertising as they only advertise on their own site.

It is not a coincidence that the two are the same word for word at all. They are rehashing job specs form co's they have no dealings with.
