what's the cheapest drink at the pub?

I actually feel very strongly about this subject. I am a alcoholic (gave up seven years ago) and have never uderstood why the government in all its binge drinking attacks has never told pubs to cut the cost of non alcohol drinks. They should also be forced to offer happy hour prices on them too.catch220

Some pubs run a "designated driver" scheme where the nominated person gets free soft drinks all evening. Worth enquiring about that but not sure if you'd get away with it if you all claim to be it.

Excellent post catch22!
I rarely drink as being the parent of 4 small children I prefer to keep my wits about me, also I live in a rural area so someone has to drive. Yet I often end up paying more than or as much as my friends/hubby/etc who are drinking alcoholic drinks. Also why is it no-one ever complains about the quality of the soft drinks except me? I hate having coke or lemonade out of the pump and it is totally carbonated/no flavour (when the box runs out)!0 -
Just a note about wine .... it's generally better value if you buy it by the bottle and not the glass.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Never really realised this was a case of being brave...You just say "can I have a glass of tapwater please" and they give it to you.
I generally have blackcurrant, however - a little more flavour.
I like both of them, because as I drink it I feel like I'm "sticking it to the man". If they chose to rip me off on coke, I'll just drink tap water instead, or 20p blackcurrant, which probably costs them money by the time they've washed the glass.
Some places charge something like 80p/pint for blackcurrant (you can even see the tesco value bottle of squash under the bar..), so it's defo tap water in there.
Catch 22 also made an awesome point above: It really does nothing to encourage sobriety when you can have a pint of icky tap coke for £1.80 or a pint of the good-old house ale for £1.60, does it. Sadly, however, the government would never pressure pubs to make soft drinks cheaper, makes far more sense for Gordon just to raise tax further on everything else. Could call it a green tax - less people drinking the "special brew" would probably cut emissions
If you want an alcoholic tipple, shandy's probably pretty cheap. It tastes good too, and you almost feel like you're having a real drink with everyone that isn't driving :beer:0 -
My local serves a bottled pint of cider (bulmers) for £2.00, where as a pint of coke (draught crap) is £2.10.
There is no way I would pay 10p more for some carbonated syrup over some lovely cider. Hence why I never drive to my local, as I always will choose alcohol.0 -
i once went for a bar lunch and ask for a glass of water and was charged 50p:beer:0

did you specify "tap water"? If you did you should have refused to pay, they can't legally charge for it, can they?0
