Which insurer is it, Direct Travel or Directline?

Sorry its Direct travel insurance on the highest cover. I probably put the other name with all the stress and panic before

I was thinking last night what an absolute nightmare this has been, how can this kind of experience be avoided in the future? I never want this to happen again. I know you see adverts on tv about being on holiday abroad and ending up in a non english speaking hospital and some people even on thier own but how can you make sure that in such an event you get the real help you need from the right people. If you are stuck in hospital ill you can't get up and do it yourself and using phones in the hospitals is expensive. My daughter could not move for the first 24 hours so couldnt do anything for herself at all and she was terrified in case she would stay that way. Having all this on top and the stress is just so not fair.

We thought this travel insurance with all thier experience would take things in hand and know what needed to be done to lessen the stress but it just got worse and worse, they in fact increased the stress. As I said before they never phoned anyone back once and only phoned my daughter once and that was with extreem prompting from myself.

I want to feel assured that if my daighter goes on holiday this wont happen again, I would rather pay more money to have piece of mind.

Things like recommendations of the most suitable english speaking hospitals in that area would be a godsend to be aware of before going away.

Its so important to get the right travel insurance and be sure your going to be looked after, but knowing which one is the right one is the question?
    Thanx

LadyK it does sound like a nightmare that your daughter has gone through with her insurance company, thank goodness she is discharged now.

Her travel rep should have been informed straightaway - thats what they are there for (not just the welcome meetings). The rep could have helped with most of the things you were worrying about, including communicating with the hospital, advising your daughter while she was in hospital, helped with the communication between the hospital and insurance company etc.

I wish they had been aware of that, although thinking about it I'm not totally sure if the travel rep knew or not because they had arranged and paid for a day trip with the travel rep which was due to happen on her first full day in the hospital, she had been taken in the evening before. There are 5 of the girls so 3 of them went on the trip whilst my daughter and her friend were in the hospital. I don't know how the trips work so not sure if the rep would have been told why they hadnt gone on the trip by the other girls or not but I will ask this

What happens if you are not on a package holiday though and don't have a rep not everyone goes on package holidays

This is all a definite learning curve

The Rep may not have been on the booked trip, or may only have asked who was there and who wasn't, not why the absentees weren't on the trip.

I don't tend to go on package holidays, so it would be up to me and my family (as was in your case) I guess, to sort out bills/liase with insurance.

We use Flexicover (good for pre-existing conditions) and they were great when we needed them to be. They use the same call centre as Boots who we also have had the misfortune of having to use and on both occasions they were fab.

I think you were unlucky with the company that handled the claim, we've only ever had good service but have been in the US not a non-English speaking country.
