Fantastic Ray. Well done you. And what a lovely post. Thanks for that, it just goes to show, it can be done.....and as you say - it's often slow but steady wins the race.
Kay. Wow. What a lot has been happening for you. Fantastic progress. Sorry to hear about your dad though. Hope all is well. If it's any consolation my dad had two heart attacks at the age of 55. He died at the age of 89 from leukaemia, entirely unrelated. He also had lung cancer when he was around 75 and recovered from that too.
Good to hear that you are taking the rough with the smooth and enjoying life. You've come a long way and achieved a lot in a year. It's all good.
Life is good here too. I'm well on my way to finishing the house renovations, on the final furling now. Not sure whether I'll sell and go onto the next one or hold for a while whilst I see what other avenues I can explore. I'll see what the market is like nearer the time.
On a personal level I have managed to lose almost 3 stones and am feeling a lot fitter. I also intend to continue to work on that too. I'm not planning on any "Ironman" stuff or running any marathons :rotfl: but I definitely want to do more to increase my strength and stamina.
Not done much travelling this year...tbh I am quite happy not bothering. I think I'm all travelled out for now........
Just getting ready for Christmas now.....
I'll take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.0 -

Ooh we are quiet on here..... are we all hatching plans, dreaming dreams and scheming schemes.........
Anyway just dropping by to wish every one Happy New Year. Let's make it a good one. It's not just a new year, it's a new decade and so much can happen.
I wonder where we will be this time 10 years into the future. Will any of us have reached that magic million.....who knows.
I don't really care.....I'm happy where I am right now.....I've made my £300k target, with room to spare. However, there's always room for MORE!!!!
I intend to keep on keeping on.
Wishing you all fab times ahead and all the luck in the world on our quest.0 -

So I have my total NAV for end of 2018 which is £227,600 including the house, and £105,500 without.
I have just cancelled my two sharesaves at work and plan to add £4000 to a LISA this tax year and then another £4000 in the new tax year to get the 25% bonus.
My target for the end of 2019 is going to be £250k, obviously including the house. It will be nice to get to a quarter of the way to the million, so is something to aim towards for sure.
So I managed to go quite a way beyond my end of year target, I am now standing at just over £279k including the house and just over £157k without. This has in part being due to the shares that I hold in the company I work for recovering, not quite back up to where they were but definitely a vast improvement from where they started the year.
So what is the target for the end of this year then.... I am going to aim for £320k, again that is going to be tough but I guess you have to aim high.
Happy New Year everyone, and I hope 2020 will be a great year for you all.LBM: Dec 2012 - Debt £38,180/ Now £0.

At school, two friends and I once had a discussion about how old we would be when we became millionaires. We were all quite sure we would make it by 30. I don't think any of us had a particular road map in mind.
Well, life appears to have finally taken me there- albeit by the scenic route. I was out by 15 years, there's the optimism of youth for you. But just got there, according to a spreadsheet which I update monthly. It shows that the value of all the stuff I have, less all the stuff i owe, is £1,027,332 to be exact.
This includes value of house, savings and investments but not pension. Also, I'm married so technically I guess only half of that is mine.
No lottery wins, no entrepreneurism, nothing exciting. It had been a slow, steady drive. 45mph on a dual carriageway in a Skoda.
University, career, got married, ladder of houses, kept working, moved into management, lived below means, saved, invested. One house, one spouse. No coke, no hookers. Pay my taxes, help old ladies cross.
And now there are seven digits on the bottom line not six. So I celebrated with a nice tuna sandwich, then did a bit of winter gardening, then we went for a mooch into town, then watched some TV.
Not sure why I'm posting here. You can ask me a question if you want.
Otherwise... good luck on your journeys. May the road rise before you. And please remember, money is just a marker at the side of the road- it's not a destination.
Cheers, Ray
.
It get so tiring hearing the same flashy social media posts where everyone's bio read "entrepreneur/business owner/CEO/founder & director" people jumping on wagons & "trading" as opposed to "investing". People glamorizing success by the flashiest car or the biggest "risk".
You're story is inspirational Ray bc it keeps us grounded & is real. it doesn't brag in our face or give us a lame quote about how the lion get;s up early to seize the day.
You give us hope that with planning, intention, sensibility & patience we may too may on day be able to join you in that celebratory tuna sandwich.
congrats to you & the family. :T:beer::j
this year i hope to be more in control of my finances this year2 -
Thought this thread might have been deleted with the forum upgrade! Not a great deal to update, I have done some overtime recently, that money has already been earmarked for my trip to Canada later in the year though. Have had both my front and rear gardens finished, well apart from my fence needing repairing after the storms.I was looking at something earlier, that prompted me to find and post in this thread. I am aiming to be mortgage neutral as quick as I can, so having enough money saved/invested that would cover my outstanding mortage. So adding up everthing excluding my pension (including LISA) I am only about 3k off doing it. If I exclude the LISA then I will be 17k away. I won't actually pay the mortgage off, but it will be a nice position to be in knowing I could if I wanted to.LBM: Dec 2012 - Debt £38,180/ Now £0.

Hi everyone......I'm actually LessonLearned. I got locked out when the site was revamped. So I've had to find myself a new nom de plume. 😂
Anyway all is well here. My FIL died last week bless him. He was 97. So he had a great life and a very long one. He has been self funding in a nursing home for the last 5 years so his capital and assets have been somewhat depleted but apparently there is a small legacy coming my way which I will share with my boys. It won't be a fortune but it's a lovely gesture on his part. I shall spend/invest it wisely. I'm off up to Scotland next week fir the funeral and have decided to stay on for a few days, maybe do a bit of sightseeing. Depends in the weather.
Muhren. You are doing well. It will be great when you are mortgage neutral. As you say you need not redeem it, but it's nice to know you can. Despite my great age 😂 I still have a smalll mortgage, why not - it's cheap borrowing at the moment.
Because interest rates are so low I am actually overpaying on a monthly basis and I may well redeem it when my fixed rate period ends. Although I will probably move again by then anyway. The refurbishment on this one is going well. Its looking good and Although I haven't had it valued yet, I think I will increased both it's price and saleability. The plan is finish it, enjoy it for a while. But......I know me, once it's done I will get itchy feet and be ready to do another one. 😂
Other than that, not much news, still doing a bit of bric a brac and antiques but it's just a hobby really. I have decided I will branch out into vintage/pre loved clothes. I love fashion,
so again it will be a nice little hobby sideline.
It won't take me to that magic £m but it will be fun.2
