Going to learn some PHP course, wish me luck!

Pick the course carefully. If you see that it uses the old-style mysql library (functions like mysql_query) to access the database, run - don't walk - away. Countless PHP tutorials still use those outdated, insecure functions which were deprecated ten years ago and removed completely from the latest version of the language. If they use mysqli or PDO connections with prepared statements, they are at least reasonably up to date.

I've been trying to learn PHP, and have done (IMO of course) reasonably well by thinking of something to write and just getting on with it. I find that better than sitting through a course where I'm being told stuff but without any real-world example of why I might want to use a particular function or code structure.

Having got to a point where I am reasonably confident, though, I'm not sure it counts towards earning an income as there are so many other people much more competent in the language, but in countries where they can undercut any hourly rate I might pick. And of course that goes back to the comment I made earlier about it not being "scalable" - any income that is proportional to the number of hours you can put into it is, by definition, limited.

Good luck with it though, everyone learns in different ways. Might be an idea to edit your post and remove the web address, though - that might be seen as "spam" posting.
  • Good morning everyone just ran 10 kilos, ate 1 alive scorpion, a pile of grass and drank it all with still moving salmon's fat. Going to learn some PHP course, wish me luck!
Yeah my past years routine is to get up 4.30 am, cold shower, 10 kilos run, breakfast and programming at bitdegree.org FREE PHP interactive courses for 4 hours. Then I go for part-time work as an administrator in a hotel and come back to eat and programme more. I eat supper, read and do a 30min day revision. During that time I realize many things and everything that I'm suffering for with my goals in years it all comes with return. Despite I'm a young programmer (3 years exp), who started from front-end I already have knowledge of back-end and UX user experience. Every year I progressively earn more than I ever used to. I haven't quit hotel just because of socializing purposes and good conditions. This year I should make ±100k year. But the end is near, as I'm going to the entrepreneurs capital Ubud in Bali soon for a full-time remote working and one day I'll make it 150k+ trust me! TRIPLE D - Determination, Dedication, and Discipline. Everything is possible, and on my way to reach the million as the sky's just a limit!

    150K+ on Zimbabwean Dollar?
Cool story, where did you get the scorpion? :)

Great news here, I've got a new tenant for my BTL, agent suggested the new rent and I thought it was optimistic but she said let's give it a go and professional woman viewed it today, cancelled the rest she was due to view and signed on the dotted line. Just got to wait for the references and credit checks and hopefully she will be in within a fortnight. Looks like the money I paid for new central heating, decorating and carpets was a good investment.

So in July I will have a full month of the new rent plus SRP kicks in. All money getting thrown at paying off the BTL mortgage.

Not sure I like the sound of a scorpion for breakfast but each to his own.

    Scorpions for breakfast........:rotfl: I'll pass.;)

    Good morning everyone.

How are we all. Making lots of money I hope. And having some fun along the way.

House sale and purchase seem to be on track, only 3 in the chain so keeping fingers crossed. I would really like to be in by September if possible. There's a few outside jobs I want to tackle before winter sets in.

I have done a financial review but have not done anything about switching banks or utilities yet. Mortgage lenders usually do one last final credit check immediately prior to issuing monies at legal completion so I think it's best to just let sleeping dogs lie for the moment.

I have however decided to start tracking both my spending and investments far more closely because I was getting a bit complacent. I have earmarked a dormant savings account to squirrel away what I call "penny savings" - the drips and drabs that it is so easy to just fritter away. The interest is pitiful but i will just use it is as a separate holding account, let it mount up a bit and then transfer it to something that is a bit more lucrative when there's a reasonable amount to transfer.

My stocks and shares ISA hAve well and truly bounced back now, so I'm a happy bunny.

Kaya. You were asking about books.

I have just finished reading a book called The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. I wouldn't call it a motivational book (like you I don't really need them, I too am pretty much a motivated self starter). Despite the title it's not just about compound interest it is about how compounding can be made to work for you in all aspects of life and of course how, if we do nothing, or worse still, if we make bad choices then how compounding can also work against us. It talks about losing weight, getting fit etc as well as about money and financial success. You might find it helpful.

Other than that no real news. Just enjoying the summer and preparing the ground for my next leap forward.....:rotfl:
  • My new tenant has moved in, I won't have much to show for it this month as I have to pay letting agents and for gas and electric certificates and a couple of small jobs I couldn't do myself but next month I will feel the benefit. Just done my sums and with the new rent plus my state pension kicking in I should be able to save £2k a month. Very excited as I want some updating done on my house, desperately need a new bathroom and the en suite isn't much better. All very doable with my new income. Come 2019 I will be paying all that off the BTL mortgage and it will be paid in 2020 and that means my potential savings will increase as no mortgage to pay. I won't save it all in July as I have all the grandchildren coming to stay for a few weeks so I will be spending lots on food and entertainment, time with them is more precious than the money.

    Hope everyone is doing well.

I haven't posted for a while as I have been spending money like it is going out of fashion, I have had a good time along the way though, which is all part of the fun. With the World Cup on, I can't see that coming to a stop anytime soon.

The new bathroom is all done, the little bit of work in the living should hopefully start Monday, I might have a bit of a rest after that to help build up the funds again.

£200k net worth by the end of the year is looking a way off at the moment, but life is about living, my saving rate hasn't dropped but I have been eating into my rainy day fund.

So at around the half way point of the year, I am stood at £185k net worth, and should hopefully get that to the mid 190's by the end of the year.

I haven't forgotten you all, I have been reading, just haven't had much to update. I hope you are all doing a little better than me this year but also having as much fun!

Sounds like you are having a good time, can I ask roughly what it cost to redo bathroom? I need mine gutted, retiled and new loo, bath and basin. I'm going to leave it till after the summer but wondered what sort of figure I should be thinking of.

I spent just over £5k, it is quite a small bathroom approx 2.5 x 2.0m. I ripped it all out myself which saved a bit as I wanted to move the bath down the other end, which required a new stud wall be put up. I had a mate do the plumbing so he did me mates rates on that. I also got a lot of the stuff in the sale which helped keep the cost down. Hopefully that will be of some use to you as a ballpark figure.

  • Thanks for that, I was budgeting £6k so hopefully it will be OK. My bathroom is small and everything has pretty well got to go back in the same place so hopefully the plumbing should be straightforward. I was thinking of removing the tiles myself as that isn't a highly skilled job but will hopefully help keep costs down.

You should be able to remove the tiles yourself, try and be a little careful though as to try and not damage the plasterboard too much. Also make sure you wear goggles when doing so to stop any getting in your eyes, and wear gloves when picking them up as they can be really sharp.
